Intel the latest to back South African SKA bid

Why exactly is it a gamble?

If South Africa wins the SKA bid, the core of this giant telescope will be constructed in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape Province near to the towns of Carnarvon and Williston, linked to a computing facility in Cape Town. However, the SKA is so huge that outlying stations will be spread over several African countries, including Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Mauritius, Madagascar, Kenya and Ghana.

this is gonna be a project our kids are going to get involved in; so HumanoidTyphoon dont worry by then we will have the Parlotones running this country :)
...construction on the SKA is scheduled to start around 2016. The first astronomical observations are expected by 2019 and the telescope should be fully functional by 2024.

HumanoidTyphoon, I understand where you are coming from, but don't worry - we'll just chase away all major great opportunities if you think that's better.
 
Is Intel brown nosing to get the tender to supply all the super dooper CPU goeters for the server stacks for the computational gedoente in Cape Town?

Very plausible, but at the same time.. given the computational power required.. Intel is one of the better choices for the systems that they'll be doing the large computations on.
