ADSL ‘to be overtaken soon'

According to Leigh, HSDPA Internet access will be more cost-effective and faster than Telkom's DSL 1024Kbps offering because it eliminates the problem of capping and the need for routers. It also makes it unnecessary for most users to pay fees to an Internet service provider.

Are they saying uncapped ? or are they gonna be paying via time used?

3G will never be as cheap as ADSL ... it is simply not in the nature of the current cell phone operators.

What is HSDPA latency like? That's one thing I haven't heard much about...

Would be nice if it was uncapped, but given the track record of the current products on offer from the cellphone operators, I do not see this as an option and if it is, will be expensive.

It also makes it unnecessary for most users to pay fees to an Internet service provider.

Much like iBurst. Negates the need for an ISP.

To answer my on question....

HSDPA latency goals are also aggressive, and in initial networks, latency will likely be in the 100 to 200 msec range.

As they dont give definitions I assume HSDPA is better than HSCSD - what ever the two stand for? High Speed something...

Currently HSCSD from MTN costs/speed is:
With MTNdataFAST you can send and receive data either via your cellphone, PDA or laptop at speeds up to 57.6kbits/sec, or 6 x faster than normal cellular connections.
- BUT !!

MTNdataFAST calls are charged at normal voice tariffs (Peak and Off-Peak), according to your contract

For mycall 100 that is R1.80/0.88, so if you want to be online for one 24 hour period it would cost R1296 peak and R633.60 offpeak = R1929.60 !!!!!!

unless I have it wrong..

from where to where?

If it is from phone/laptop to base station i can see the gamers snatching it up

I don't care if it's faster than ADSL.
The speed is not the issue. It must be uncapped first of all!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSDPA
High-Speed Downlink Packet Access or HSDPA [1] is a new mobile telephony protocol. Also called 3.5G (or "3½G"). High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a packet-based data service with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbit/s (and 20 Mbit/s for MIMO systems) over a 5MHz bandwidth in W-CDMA downlink.

Cheaper, first of all. They can say uncapped all they want, but if you have to budget your time on-line because you're being billed per Gig then it's just a cap you're forced to impose yourself.

As I recall the reason all the 3G products scored so badly in the study RPM did was because they were expensive. I'm afraid that, as expensive as ADSL is, any wireless technlogy offered by the cellphone operators will never be cheaper.

So, early adoption is a pipe-dream. People don't want FASTER connections. They want CHEAP. With a faster connection I'll just reach my cap or my budget faster. Pointless. That's not even counting that content can only be delivered as fast as it can be sent. What's the point of an uber-fast connection to an ISP when the international link behind it can't keep up?

Local loop unbundling (LLU) is the way to go for better and faster ADSL. HSDPA may sound great but it shouldn't be faster than wired solutions and the lack of LLU seems to be a cause. This article (http://www.mybroadband.co.za/nephp/?m=show&id=1629) says a lot about what is possible and just check out https://www.bethere.co.uk/homebroadband.do to see what can be offered when this happens.

ADSL in SA is slow and expensive. ADSL in other countries is fast and cheap.

I've had to readjust to my slow connection after returning from London where I used a 2Mbit uncapped connection. A friend still there is using a 24Mbit connection. The best thing about that 2Mbit connection was that I could max it out. Thats a >250KB/s download speed!

So fast it reads the future

ADSL 'to be overtaken soon'
By Warwick Ashford, ITWeb, 11 December 2006

Wow, it must be fast, this article is dated 11 December 2006.....thats 11 months into the future.

I just hope this yr goes fast so i can move to where there is really good solutions  cause quite frankly every single tech advance that sees drastic uptake + cost savings else where comes out here in a expensive form and heavily restircted. How long can the people in power fool everyone?

Eliminates the problem of capping... aaahh.. by charging for anything you use over you bundle at R2 per meg... what a solution to the cap.

Unnecessary for most users to pay fees to an Internet service provider... what ? Is it free? Or are they saying... "No, no, we are not ISPs... the internet comes from up there somewhere..."

have another one.

Does Leigh need Ericsson backup to pitch their marketing story? Playing experts in the wireless industry they should know better - radio will never ever beat speeds on cable or fibre... Sigh.. EVER

This article is SO premature as 3G has no mentionable coverage unless you live in the International Departures hall, and though it talks about HSDPA (3G upgrade) it conveniently forgets about ADSL2 (ADSL upgrade) beating their "believed possible" speeds wide out of the bush with a whopping 24 Mbit/s over normal copper..

Ouch..

I think what they were implying was that their HSDPA will beat TELKOM ADSL. That's the only point I might agree with in the article.
HOWEVER... since Vodacom = Telkom, why should their pricing structure (and the public) win?

agreed

I agree that's their comparison, but its an unfair way of dressing up an argument to bring across a weak point - by the wireless industry experts..

They basically claim that their future wireless transmission technology will beat the currently existing cable transmission technology, which is likely and correct - but this statement does not hold anything concrete for what the telecoms scenario will be looking like at any same point in time in the future. (e.g. when HSDPA might be rolled out, so might ADSL2).

What is the point of comparing DVD with BetaMax? Or Hybrid engines with Steam engines? – Unless, of course, you have to sell a product, and get free advertising by issuing a controversial article like this..
