South Africa can learn from Czech Republic’s ADSL growth

First Telkom will have to decide who is more important to them, the shareholders, or their customers. I have a feeling they don't have customers, only cashcows ... :(

I wonder what the Czech Republic charges for its adsl and what speed they get.

CESKY’s prices are another indication of what we have been telling Telkom, the DOC and ICASA for a long time now. There is a place for smaller cap accounts (3G is a smaller cap), but the price difference between a 3G and a 10G account is minimal. The same goes for the 6G and 20G. The idea of using a near linear scale is a money making scheme…plain and simple.

BTW: The 512 3G service will cost you R 271, while the 1024 20G service costs R 618

A 5G additional block of data costs R 60, the same amount we pay for a Gig.

There is an uncapped solution for not much more than the capped options...

Now there's a shining example of what can be done when a company tries to improve its service as opposed to telscum who's only interested in improving their profit margins

Hi All

Just spent some time with a forex calculator on all the ADSL packages they offer and it's really interesting how their packages are structured. It would seem that there are two main ADSL sections. (Domestic and Business/Professional) - The domestic is broken into two subsections namely Express (Throttled once you reach allocated data limit or fair use limit) and Broadband (Hard capped once over your allotted limit however low contentions).

A break down of the different packages are as follows (I've done my best to do a forex calculation based on CKR0.255 to R1. All prices are excluding VAT.

DOMESTIC - Express Packages ADSL
No Hard Capping - Throttled Connections

Connections are throttled once reaching 'x' amount of data.
Connections are throttled on a weekly basis.
ie. On Internet Express (128/64kbps) if your Fair use is 250MB then once you reach that for the current week you'll be throttled to 64kbps/64kbps and you will be unthrottled at the end of the week cycle and only throttled once you reach 250MB again.

128/64kbps (Throttled to 64/64 when over 250MB/week)
Price - CZK399.00 ex VAT (+-R89.78)

512/128kbps (Throttled to 256/128 when over and 1GB and 64/64 when over 2GB for the week)
Price - CZK599.00 ex VAT (+-R134.78)

1024/256kbps (Throttled to 512/128 when over 2GB and 64/64 when over 4GB for the week)
Price - CZK799.00 ex VAT (+-R179.78)

2048/256kbps (Throttled to 1024/128 when over 3GB and 128/128 when over 6GB for the week)

Price - CZK1399.00 ex VAT (+-R314.78)

Hi Jonga

Thanks a bunch for this great info...it is rather clear why their ADSL uptake is higher than ours...
