Labour Unions better pay attention to this

I look at it differently...Why shouldn't it happen? Cut costs, less labor intensive, no strikes, toy toys , panics , medical aid or pension, there is a lot can be said for automation.

If everything gets automated then what will people do for money? Automation makes sense in an ideal world but how can it work in a system such as ours?

When everything is automated methods for removing currency in totality can be looked at and people can spend time on, the arts, science, Marine/space exploration etc....with a few million doing maintenance on the devices. Once freed from currency and greed the human race might eventually get to a level of social evolution that is peaceful

no I am NOT a communist
no I am NOT a hippy

Yes I am playing devils advocate :)

and if one of you brings up skynet I am going to feed you to VIOAdmin

lol, we actually had this conversation in the office today. Robots cant do very complicated things yet and dont deal well in changing environments. there will still be jobs for people, however it will be more specialized. it will be a huge shift for humanity, especially when people think along traditionial lines to make money, its just not going to be the same way in future. how quickly will people adapt though?

at least i'll still have a job programming though :D good luck to the robot having to decipher my clients requirements... lol

I thought about it a while back. What if we could get a social shift and make money completely obsolete. Everyone would do what they are most suited to.... As long as you worked/contributed in some way or form, you are sorted for living space and whatever needs you have. For those that don't want to work have to make due on their own (not sure about that part yet)

The whole intention behind machines is that they alleviate our day to day functions.

Eina, that is communism. The state provides and the people work themselves to death.

LOL I said I am not a communist :p I was leaning more towards Gene Roddenberry's idea of a better world.....

Thats the whole point. Robotics and automation are great for repetitive tasks and some minor troubleshooting tasks but for adapting situations, nothing can yet beat the human mind and the application of knowledge. Automation should be seen as a cure for menial, humdrum everyday tasks and mankind can concentrate on higher.

Yes its ideal and pie in the sky but if we don't aim for something, you'll never get there :P

As it stands, the metal workers unions have pushed the employers too far now. I know this because a good friend of mine owns an automation company specialising in automation in the steel industry - he says business has never boomed quite like it is right now. The unions justify their existence by striking regularly and making unreasonable demands. Well these are the consequences - expect more job losses as companies either shut up shop or automate as much as possible...

This says nothing about overcoming scarcity of resources. Until that happens money and prices are the most efficient means of allocating said resources.

Automation does not "destroy" jobs. Why do people treat jobs as these finite roles that should never be abolished? If that was the case (and we took Calvinism to heart) then we shouldn't be using so much as a shovel to aid our plight, let alone a robot.

And regarding "greed"; it amuses me that self-interest is conflated into some sort of sin. As Milton Friedman said: "Of course, we're never greedy, it's always the other fellow who's greedy!"

For a country that can hardly provide 4Mbps ADSL to the citizens, I would hardly worry about us being replaced by robots.

never said automation destroys jobs - I actually maintain that they decrease the need for people to overwork themselves (and in some cases create jobs, someone needs to maintain all the bots, droids etc...) I am all for tools to help us work more, the more tools we have the more productive we become (there is another discussion in there about over complicating things and having too many tools as well.... ) the more time we have to spend on things that can advance the human race and our social evolution.

I never said greed was a sin. I said it's a problem. If there was no greed (or reward for greed) there would be no Mugabe's, there wouldn't be a point....

In humanity lies greatness that needs to be nurtured to let it grow. It is however now in the compost heap still waiting for the right attention.
