Telkom’s ‘not doable’ attitude towards ADSL not good enough

All that can be added to the state of affairs is:

Those people in the organizations that can do anything about improving telecoms (land line costs, call costs (land line & cell), SMS costs, broadband costs, service levels) do not recognize their attitude and until they do, things will stay the same. :(

I predict that one day in the near future Telkom is going to eat their words, ‘it is not doable’.
 
One day soon Telkom is going to fall flat on their face.
 
I am so sick of the goons at Telkom trying to pull the wool over the population and the DoC's eyes by trying to say that they cannot reduce their fees any further, when overseas the broadband rates come down almost daily because of staunch competition. Why is that every other country in the world (regardless of size of population e.g. New Zealand) can make a success of affordable, fast and largely unlimited broadband but we can't. There is nothing different about the telecoms environment in South Africa, other than utter GREED!!! Telkom should be taught a lesson on economies of scale i.e. the more affordable you make broadband the more people will use it, which means that the profit that they are use to making off a small amount of people will grow as more people will be using the service. They will never achieve the target of 680 000 adsl users unless they drastically reduce their prices i.e. REMOVE MONTHLY RENTAL!!!

The way I see it, Telkom should be given a choice.....either remove monthly line rental, thereby making adsl affordable to masses, or face stiff competition by the unbundling of the Local Loop. I can almost guarantee that IS and the other will not hesitate to take full advantage of the second option and Telkom will be left in their dust.
 
Isnt it time that the focus is put on Government to start affecting the changes? Effectively they are the ones that need to start making some pretty serious decisions. Telkom will continue to fight the new legislations and changes till their last dying breath, they have no reason to listen to the public because they simply just don't care! Unbundle the local loop AND give the other companies a chance to purchase wholesale bandwidth from SAT-3! In the interim why doesnt ISPA rather take a shot at Government for failing to deliver services to the public and for failing to protect the public from the high rates charged even after they have identified the fees as "exorbitant" !
 
In all technical sence, the SA goverment is **OWNED** by the SA PEOPLE. The government is a representation of the populous. So in essence, we are screwing ourselves.

Dont underestimate the power of one! Its time to get drastic!
 
The only reason it's "not doable" is because it means less profit. But as BroadbandStarved states above - thats not the case. In the long run they will be landing more ADSL users and therefore making more money. Unless, of course, they won't be able to handle the mass signups. So it's just easier for them to milk us while they can.
 
Nothing will happen they want to create the same environment for SNO to milk the public... remember "they" are shareholders indirectly...
 
Its about time to hold another three day meeting with all parties of the communications industry to talk about how nice it would be, eat and drink and have a conference falcilty make a nice profit.

So true, and what makes me mad, is that they just refuse to even give a reasonable explanation for it. Do they not realise that people will no long just accept all the lies that they are being feed by Telkom are want answers and facts. :(

The DoC should send someone with the correct technical expertise into Telkom to debunk their lies. But I suppose the DoC will also take this one lying down.
 
I want to know how much 1GB of data transfer costs Telkom over the international undersea cable that they own 20% of, as opposed to how much they're charging for it. That will be the most embarassing figure for Telkom, because when it comes out that it is costing them 50 cents but they are charging R60 on the other side of the equation, they won't have a moral leg to stand on.
 
Its all upto the gov, yes telkom is expensive but when the gov does nothing well, then you really have to ask whats the point of them representing us. 1 more month and we will most likely hear the same promises being made and until someone holds them accountable, they the gov will do as they please proctecting their assets as they see fit.

I suspect it is not greed, but a mental block which is hinged on resistance to change.

When a person or people are not mature within themselves, they would not change until forced.

This is because they cannot see beyond themselves and recognize the facts for what they are.

It would be better for them (those that have a say and influence in telecoms) and us, that they see their blockages because that'll result in them enjoying what they are doing and it would result in ingenuous solutions.

This is what happens when you retrench all your engineers [aka the heart of a tech company] and replace them with a bunch of managers who sit in meetings all day and babble about shareprices and legislation.

In the end, what Telkom is really saying is : "WE DO NOT KNOW HOW" . And read above paragraph as to why they don't know how.

Anyone with common sense shouldve seen this coming from miles away.
