The bomb squad had to search ANC Youth League president Julius Malema's house twice after he received threats, he said during on interview on Talk Radio 702 on Tuesday.
Listeners were given an hour to call the radio station and ask Malema questions.
A caller asked Malema why he needed bodyguards.
“I have bodyguards because of the possibility of being mobbed and my life has been threatened,” Malema said.
“Sometimes you can’t even move an inch and you need someone to help you survive those things.”
Malema said that in the past two weeks someone in the ANC had claimed to have been offered R1 million to kill him.
During the interview, Malema touched on the issues of nationalisation, the City Press newspaper story on his family trust fund, and controversy about a column published in the Sowetan newspaper.
Last month, City Press reported that Malema was the sole trustee of a secret family trust, registered in the name of his five-year-old son, which he allegedly used to finance his lavish lifestyle.
Following the report, freelance columnist Eric Miyeni wrote a column for the Sowetan newspaper in which he described City Press editor Ferial Haffajee as “an agent for white capitalists”. – Sapa
