Man killed after stealing pal’s chicken

A piece of chicken cost this Cape Flats man his life.

Lenoven Jansen is described by his wife, Julian, as a fun person who loved to joke and tease others.

However, on Sunday the 45-year-old father of three’s jokes came to a tragic end when he was stabbed by a friend after helping himself to a piece of the man’s chicken.

Witnesses say Lenoven and his friend, Clive van Dieman, 43, along with some other friends were sitting in Clive’s backyard in Robin Street, Bishop Lavis, around lunch time on Sunday.

It is believed the long-time friends were drinking while Clive was having lunch.

Julian says shortly after she got home from church, she got the horrifying news that her husband was dead.

“I don’t know how this happened but I believe Lenoven took a piece of chicken from his (Van Dieman’s) plate,” she says.

“Knowing my husband, he was probably teasing Clive and made a joke as he took the chicken, then it fell on the floor.”

Lenoven’s cousin, William Jasson, 44, says the murder has shocked them as they all grew up together.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer November Filander says van Dieman was arrested on Sunday.

The cop says: “The victim grabbed a piece of meat from the suspect’s plate. An argument ensued between them when the suspect stabbed him in the chest.”

The suspect appeared in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates’ Court on Monday where he faces a murder charge.
