I have a Telkom 384kbps adsl line that is giving me uphill.

2 or 3 times a week I am unable to connect. I have to phone telkom and ask them to refresh the port. They ask me to turn the modem off, tinker about for a while then ask me to turn it on again and it works.

Every time I phone I ask what is causing this, as it is a real pain in the rear to have to do this 3 times a week, especially when I need to work late at night and the call centre is closed... So far nobody has offed the slightest hint as to what the cause could be.

Does anyone have an Idea what could be causing this, and what to do about it?

1. It could be a dry joint on the physical cable servicing your premises.
2. It could be a faulty port on the DSLAM.
3. It could be your modem.

Process of elimination:
1. Swop your modem (loan a modem from someone) and test it for a day or two.
2. If still a problem, log a fault and explain that it is an intermittent cable fault (tell them that you have swopped modems already).
3. When the techie gets to you, ensure that he tests your line from your modem back to the DSLAM.

PS. where are you located? (town/city)

I had the same problem and it ended up being the billion 400g router that was causing me problems with CRC errors.

Could you post all your line stats + errors? Also try plugging the router straight into the wall jack without the phones or anything else connected and post the same stats and errors so I can compare them to see if there is anything significant.

Also could you post a tracert to any local website

For those of us who form part of lower creation and don't have sufficient boffin skills, could you tell me what line stats you need, where to find them, and how to post a tracer to a local website? :o

Thanks

@Jeffrsnapln

to run a tracert open command prompt
window xp click start -> run type cmd press enter
windows 7 or vista click start by "search progragrams and files" type cmd press enter

a black window should appear /this is called a command prompt ;)

in the black window / "command promt" type
Code:
tracert www.telkomsa.net

copy the results and paste on this forum

to help with the line stats I need ur modem type ;)

Doing a traceroute is easy.

Windows : tracert www.mweb.co.za
Linux (depending on your linux/unix distro) : traceroute www.mweb.co.za

You can usually get the line stats from the router web console itself, this is dependent on which router you've got.

it easier typing this in the command prompt cause it saves it in a text file automatically and it is easy to copy paste

Code:
tracert www.telkomsa.net > C:\tracert.txt

1. login into your router by typing either 10.0.0.2, 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Firefox etc.)
2. Enter default username and password which is admin for both
3. Look for a tab which says adsl > stats or status or xdsl in the router main page depending on the router you may have to click the advanced tab to find it (This should cover most routers which say the adsl stats)
