DoC’s 100% Internet access promise

The only way this could happen is if the telkom board and most of the managers go the same way as the russian royal families...

Until telkom lets go of the pie, no one will get a slice...
 
Government's chasing moving goalposts again. Typically by not defining everything upfront they build in leeway to change the definitions later, usually after they've failed to achieve targets.
 
What have the DoC actually achieved in SA that they can brag about?
please give us a few examples before we go believing these vapourous announcements.

I think you are confused. This is about universal access, i.e. providing services to areas with NO services, mostly in deep rural areas. This applies to ALL operators. They make mention of 2km...


The question to DoC should be "What is happening to the USAF money?".

The reason broadband penetration and general connectivity is so low and so expensive in S.A. is because no-one in sa can connect anything or anyone to the net without a nod from telkom and money changing hands in one form or another...

When telkom is either removed or de-clawed, this process will be infinitely cheaper and simpler and allow anyone and everyone with an idea a means to connect...

Any operator with a licence can provide a service to anyone in the country wherever and whenever they want to and without any link to Telkom's network at all.

This thread is about 100% INTERNET ACCESS not 100% broadband access, that's the yada-yada-yada thread. You don't need broadband to access the Internet - exactly what all Arthur Goldstuck and the author are querying.

The government’s guidelines as to what broadband means remains uncertain although according to Goldstuck, at one point the definition of broadband in terms of “universal access means having a point of access within a 2km radius of a person located in a sparsely populated area”.

Goldstuck says that if universal access in this form happens to be the goal that the Ministry of Communications has put in place for 2020 “it could be a highly disingenuous target.”

I suspect that by 2020 any internet access and use will be linked to the censorship law which itself will have been hugely expanded and tightened beyond what the ANC is pushing through now.
By then forums like this will not exist except to heap praise on the rulers.
Any criticism will draw the same response as in Stalin's Russia

Is this like those call centres? Or a hot-line for complaints that is never answered? Do you jump through a buttload of hoops and bribe everyone just to be considered? And then your application is rejected for some spurious reason. This smells of a justification, “See how open and equitable we are.” “Any operator with a licence can provide a service to anyone in the country wherever and whenever they want to and without any link to Telkom's network at all.”

Yeah, right.

Have to agree that to apply for a new licence is a bitch but I was referring to all the current licence holders.

EDIT: reply was also in context of internet access and not broadband access. Internet can be accessed via various mediums (as you know).
