Today being a public holiday I am at home get a phone call to my land line saying "Hello Mr {My Surname} your pc has a virus".

First thing I thought was this was interesting, if this is a scam let's wait their time on me instead of some granny giving away her banking details.

Disconnected router and continued.

Each time she said were she was phoning from the dodgy line faded it was really noisy in the background and she sounded Indian.

I was curious so I followed her instructions cmd > event viewer "Look you have errors in your event viewer" she says (what windows user doesn't)

then cmd again and some command I can't remember that produced the list of all the installed apps on my pc, the SHE RECITED THE ENTIRE CLASS ID OF THE LAPTOP install of windows 7.

Then I got really freaked out, please tell me every has that is not my unique id send over the Internet.

I asked if she was phoning from another country and then the phone went dead.

Is this a scam to get me to by virus software or what. The laptop is a work laptop and does not have a direct paper trail to me.

Are they just trolling a list of the 700K ADSL users in SA via their phone number.

A quick google search showed up a few examples of the same thing saying it was scareware scam. Has this happened to anyone else.

Nope, but got a strange SMS today that stated:-

"Vodacom has detected your cellphone is using the incorrect Internet or MMS settings. Please reply 'yes' (free SMS) to receive the correct settings."
