Hi,

We have a list of cellphone towers around Johanneburg which I am trying to physically locate. Does anyone know of a list that references the address of cellphone towers.
For eg: this is how they are described:
31-Edleen-3
or
04-Terenure-3

ect

Try getting hold of an android phone which will assist you in locating their proximity.

Uh what network are you working with? Each network names their towers differently also depends if it is a co-lo. Each cell site is usually defined by a site number and a site name. The site name usually has something to do with the sites gepgraphic location. MTN name their sites as such : T354 Uvongo or T659 Fort Pearson Farm. Vodacom sites are named like BS3363 Westville Exchange. CellC would be 5587 La Harve Farm or 3360 Sea Cow Lake. One cell mast can have upto 4 or 5 different site numbers depending on how many guys are co-locating. There is no central mast database that I know of. Each network operates their own cell network plan.

The best suggestion I have is to figure out which network u want then ask them very kindly for their google earth MW plan. I doubt they will furnish you with this though. The MW plans are real time savers especially when you are trying to figure out LOS to other sites.

Would asking ICASA be a waste of time? Theoretically they should have all networks...shouldn't they?

Hi Andrew

I can't help you but have a look at this post (http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/273804-Tower-Locations-and-Improving-Signal-Strength?p=6619272#post6619272). I have (visually) mapped the towers in the Linden/Northcliff area. By the end of the weekend I should be able to figure out which tower belongs to which provider(s).

Using the Android G-Mon program can assist in locating the towers but you will have to log quite a number of samples to help with that.

You can also Location-API.com, but you will need more precise data (LAC, CID, etc)
