Johannesburg - Donovan Moodley, the convicted killer of 21-year-old student Leigh Matthews, has asked for a retrial to prove who her real killers are, The Star newspaper reported on Thursday.

In his 300-page application to the South Gauteng High Court, Moodley claims that he did not kill Matthews, but hid the truth for seven years because he feared for his life.

Moodley was found guilty of murdering Matthews after he kidnapped her from the Bond University campus in Sandton, Johannesburg, in July 2004.

He held her for several hours before taking R50 000 ransom money from her father and then shot her.

He was sentenced to life in prison for the murder, 15 years for the kidnapping and 10 years for extortion by Judge Joop Labuschagne on August 4 2005.

Moodley claims in the application, that three drug dealers, called Frank, Allie and Jemba, forced him to kidnap Matthews.

This was after their attempt to kidnap a French student, named Gasper, didn't go as planned.

He said he didn't know the drug dealers but wanted to help them kidnap Gasper because he owed them money and was wealthy.

Moodley said he was so scared of the three, he left Bond University, but they tracked him at home, the report indicated.

I know Donovan Moodley personally and have been friends with his family for years. The guys is a liar of note and misled all of us for years as to who he was and what his real motives were. We investigated the "other people involved" scenario for months and we could not find one single shred of evidence. I personally took weeks off work to go and investigate these possibilities and not one single other student at Bond could even corroborate that there were drug dealers operating in the area. As for Gaspar, the French student, we spoke to him on the phone and he could not offer up any light on the story.

We went from supporting Donovan initially to quickly realising that this guy was lying through his teeth and making stuff up as he went along. The saddest thing of all is that he has dragged his family through all of this offering them hope, then taking it away.

If you will remember Donovan confessed as soon as he was arrested. This story of others being involved came from the lawyer that he met the day after he was arrested. I strongly suspect the guy helped him concoct an alibi. But once he got sentenced he realised he was gonna be put away for a long time and he better try something. The court should just tell him to get stuffed and quit wasting everybody's time.

Wow Gary, I am shocked you know a murderer personally.:sick:

I wonder if the retrial will be granted and if there is any other evidence that was perhaps witheld. The dude does sound like a killer and he should rot in jail.

In his first appeal in November 2005, Moodley appealed to the Supreme Court, requesting a retrial.

In June 2006, Moodley appealed once more, claiming that he had worked with co-conspirators in the murder, and that the police had failed to bring them to book. He also claimed to have been framed.

In November 2009, Moodley approached the Johannesburg High Court to have his life sentence overturned on a technicality.

Three strikes. You're out.

Johannesburg – Donovan Moodley, who murdered Johannesburg student Leigh Matthews, finally reached the end of the road in his application for appeal against his life sentence on Wednesday.

Chief judge Sandile Ngcobo and the other 10 judges of the Constitutional Court unanimously denied Moodley’s application.

They said success with such an appeal had no chance of succeeding.

Now there are no further legal avenues to which Moodley can turn.

With this, the Constitutional Court has brought an end to one of the most high-profile legal sagas in recent times.

Life in prison. Would it be fair to offer prisoners the following. Life in prison or death penalty. I wonder how many will choose the latter....
 
Yeah, OJ is probably also still trying to prove who the real killers are who snuck into his house, beat his wife mercilessly and murdered her without him finding out.

Personally I don't know any but is it really that big a shock that someone on the forum actually knows the family or him personally. It is a "small" world and MyBB is a diverse community.

I find it interesting that Gary knows him but certainly not shocked. And I am not

sickened by it? It is not as if Gary is a murdered all of a sudden.

so there are these thugs that you were so afraid of, you decided rather than rat them out, to take the fall and keep this to yourself for 7 years. You now want to bring these same guys in to share your jail cell with you.... I cant see that turning out well at all.
