Hi Folks,

Maybe someone has some advice here as I'm at a loss with Telkom (as are many others no doubt, but I’ve got to try)

Since it was installed my ADSL was performing well giving 4 Mbps speeds, no problem. Since March I’ve been getting intermittent service and slow speeds (best possible 2 Mbps and sometimes like today, just about no data transfer). My line attenuation is fine but my router does report CRC and Header errors and I get timeouts to even the 3rd hop. I have 2 different ISP accounts (MWeb and Axxess) and tried different routers (with / without micro-filters etc.) but same results.

I’ve logged at least 2 calls every month since March (and escalated it numerous times) but Telkom it seems just can’t find anything wrong. Any bright ideas?

Noise margin of 12.5 is not great. I'd guess that that is your problem. It probably dips and the router disconnects.
Either see if there are any obvious sources of noise at your home and fix or remove them, or alternatively simply ask telkom to rank your connection down to 3mb which will be more stable.

Sure 12.5 db's not great but I've had as high as 16 and still got 4 Mbps. The line was fine for more than a year and then since Mar all my hassles started. I've tried downgrading to 2 mb but that only made it worse! The router doesn't actually disconnect and there's no synching problems, the data rates just fall to such a point that a modem would actually be quicker :P I suspect there's something wrong at the DSLAM / Exchange but clearly Telkom doesn't think so . . .
 
Very low attenuation - your line to exchange can't be longer than about 800m. you SHOULD be able to get over 16mbps with that, even... but your noise margins are horrible considering the line distance. Something along that line is causing a lot of noise which is what you need to get checked out, and try sort yourself out with a proper ADSL filter and POTS filters for each phone/fax machine/etc. Do those things and your line will easily reach 10Mbps or higher
 
Have you checked if there is alot of noise on the line when plugging the phone with the filter on/off? This can give an indication if the line has become worse or not.

Although the noise margin is similar to what you had, it is possibly fluctuating alot causing the speeds to dip.

What happens when you download using a download manager with 4 or more connections? how much can you max the line?
