Scratched CD repair suggestions

Hi Guys

My PS2 game GRand Theft Auto game freezes ever since my daughter kicked the game console "by mistake" while I was playing it. No console damage as I can play the other games fine.

Any suggestions on what I can use to repair the scratches on the CD?
 
This raises an opportunity for me to talk about one of my pet peeves, finally. I do believe that in this case you should be able to go to the producers and/or distributors and demand a replacement at a cost of no more than the price of a DVD R if that. As they enforce copy protection and removes your ability to back up a disk. But you have paid for the software and can never lose the right to play the game, they must take the risk of physical damage. If any physical damage happens you should be able to it replaced at the cost of the physical damage or no cost at all, as you have already paid for the software.

Rant over.

As for fixing the disk I cannot give any advice sorry.

I had a simalar problem with GT4 got some stuff ( cant remember what it was called ) from a cd shop. But it depends on how bad the scratch is .
 
Depends on how bad the scratch is, but toothpaste always works on small surface scratches. Cover the bottom of the CD in toothpaste leave for about 10 mins and wash under water to clean toothpaste off. works like a charm.
 
I once were able to restore a badly scratched CD by vigorously polish it with Brasso.

Do it @ your own risk.

Whatever you use - wipe form the inside small ring out towards the outside in straight lines. DO NOT MAKE CIRCLES.
I have used smooth peanut butter before to sort a data-DVD out.
I put some [like a dab] on a soft cloth [t-shirt I wos wearing].
Located the scratch and went over it quite hard with the smear of peanut butter [From inner circle straight out]. Did this a couple of times till it looked like I had reallly scrached the DVD. Washed it with dishwashing detergent and dried it.
It worked fine thereafter.
Of course - I immediately backed up the DVD - just in case.

P.S. DVD was scratched by me dropping it and then a toolbox in it while trying to pick it up. The scratch is quite deep and not straight.
 
Option 2 : If all else fails, Wait till your daughter is old enough to start making money and make her buy you a new copy...

It is for cleaning and repairing of scratches.

From the product specs:
"Repairs most scratches and other disc imperfections"

Brasso is an abrasive isnt it? We used it in school to polish up the perspex things we built. It removed ALL the nicks and scratches we had and made the items shine like a new dime. But Brasso is primarily used to clean metal objects right? So be careful, the chemicals might eat away your data layer of your disc if you happen to get it on the top instead of on the bottom.

Handle with care...
 
Yep - brasso is an abbraisive, so is peanut butter, and so is water paper [a superfine sand paper - supposed ot be used with water].

We also used brasso in school for our perspex stuff.
Ever soaked a shatterproof ruler for like 4 weeks in Brasso ?
It becomes like rubber.
 
ok, so peanut butter is an abbrasive... but it tastes SOOO much better than Brasso!

Ruler trick... hehehe, have to try that one.

Was sticky tape not another one to use?
...and yes as Person said. Toothpaste way has always worked for me...even on hecticly scratched CD's/DVD's.

Smear it over the whole data side on the disc. Wait 5-10 mins...wash off under water. Dry with a very soft cloth.... Rubbing out and not in circles.

I seem to remember the sticky tape way was placing it over the scratch wait 5 mins...then very slowly peel it off. *Do not rip/pull* I have not tried this but have had other people i know try and seemed to work too. However i think this is for more dirt inside scratched areas.

Well if you are based in Cape Town and your CD is seriously scratched (i.e. the toothpaste, brasso, alcohol, etc don't work) try "Eclipse CD Repairs". They operates out of Woodstock, the Yellow Pages lists a phone number.

My SSX 3 CD for the PS2 was damaged and since I play it online occasionally (latency is bad, don't even ask) I needed to use the original. Anyway, after trying all the simple methods and even some of the repair kits, one of the video stores game me the details for "Eclipse CD Repairs".

They have this machine which takes your CD and using water and a very fine sand paper, sands down a fraction of a millimeter off the top of the CD's surface. The results were truly amazing, not a scratch left and the CD plays perfectly.
