The U.S. Department of Justice has asked a federal judge to force Google to commit one of the worst privacy violations in history, one that seems, on its face, to be a gross overreaching of its actual powers.

The case in question is an attempt by the government to revive the Child Online Protection Act, which was struck down for being too broad. The law would have issued penalties for websites that allowed minors to access pornography, and the DOJ is attempting to prove that internet users tend to fall, at random, on porn sites, which in their opinion requires COPA.

We all know that sometimes, you land on a porn site, but to prove it, the DOJ wants Google to hand over one million random web addresses and the entire Google search history for any one-week period.

Google told them to go to hell.

The government indicated that other, unspecified search engines have agreed to release the information, but not Google.

Now I wonder who these morons are .... Yahoo or Microsoft ???.

Thanks Google ... now I know who to trust with my data.
 
Me personaly I dont have a problem in preventing children from accessing porn sites. if the details that they asked for did not have information on the users that did the search then I think that google should give the info to them. If you think about all the children that are getting into trouble because they learn from porn then I say try and help protect the children.
 
I think that should come to a agreed ment on how they can help with out invading the pricacy of other
 
A rule of thumb is, when you have the net and kids in the same house, install net nanny or something similar.
 
Yes net nanny and the likes are good but they are not fool proof it wont hurt if a peron has a extra page to log into and some people cant afford thing like net nanny

I'm not sure how this is a violation of anyone's privacy but Google's and I suspect this is why they have such a massive problem with it.

Unless they are somehow (Cookies?) linking my PC to the search records requested I don't see much of a problem with this. I suspect that Google's apparent altruistic approach to this is nothing more than an attempt to protect their intellectual property, i.e. search patterns for internet usage. If this type of information was made publicly available it would certainly give lesser search engines an insight into the type of business Google receives and then allow then to attempt to imitate this in some way ...

I don't know ... just thinking out loud ... am I way off?
 
Ummm - please tell me if my frame of mind is correct:

Should the US Gov not rather be concerned about sites about guns, explosives, killing tactics, terrorist activities, violence, street fighting etc etc than sites that show some skin, albeit not always in a classy way? At some or other stage in one's life the real thing might present itself, but until then whats the problem if someone has the urge to oogle at someone on a computer screen? If this is all about child porn then understandable, but normal porn? Surely not?

They have their priorities all wrong. Same as the Hot Coffee mod with Grand Theft Auto - they wanted the sex blocked out but what, the guns could stay and you could still shoot people. Tut tut.

I have no problems with porn but if a child say 11years old goes on to a adult site and sees to people going at it they may think it is normal which for adults it is normal but not for kids. so the next time a perv goes to the kid and offers a sweetie the kid might think because they saw adults doing it it is ok for them

I dont see what they are going on about, the US have a big system where people search for innocent words to see if they get child porn, so they can work with the search engine to stop access to that website with that innocent word. Attacking them (search engines) is the wrong thing to do, rather work with them I would say.
 
do an experiment in google.... www.google.com , click on 'prefrences' and then switch off 'Safe Search' .. select "Google Images" and do a porn search.... you dont need to surf any porn sites... its all there.
 
Minors should be supervised at all times when they are using the internet. The parents or gaurdians only needs to check up on them every five minutes or so, just to make sure.

Just as with movies, video games etc, the parents are the ones that has to make sure that their children are safe from explicit contents, nudity etc.

The US goverment has screwed up their priorities once more. :mad:

You are my hero for the month.

The way i see it, its about the money. If they go after violent video games with guns then they have to go after violent movies with guns. While they are at it they might as well change their gun laws that will stem the sale of guns.
Oops if they do that who is going to fund their election campains ?

But wait they need to look like they are getting rid of socials ills. Lets see what is easy, forget health, social security, energy, environment, target porn.
