The Post-Rock/Instrumental Music Thread

It's night time and while listening to my favourite night-time genre, I thought I would start a thread on it so I could share some amazing music with you interested folk and introduce new people to a genre with a fairly small listening group.

For those not familiar with Post-Rock, here is a short description from Wikipedia.


Post-rock is a subgenre of progressive rock characterized by the use of instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms and "guitars as facilitators of timbre and textures" not traditionally found in rock. Post-rock musicians typically produce instrumental music.

The post-rock sound incorporates characteristics from a variety of musical genres, including ambient, jazz, electronica, and experimental.[4] Early post-rock groups also often exhibited strong influence from the krautrock of the '70s, particularly borrowing elements of "motorik", the characteristic krautrock rhythm.

Vocals are often omitted from post-rock; however, this does not necessarily mean they are absent entirely. When vocals are included, the use is typically non-traditional: some post-rock bands employ vocals as purely instrumental efforts and incidental to the sound, rather than a more traditional use where "clean", easily-interpretable vocals are important for poetic and lyrical meaning.

I was introduced to Post-Rock about a year ago, when while watching an advert for Discovery channel I asked myself, "what is that amazing music?". The band was Explosions in the Sky, one of the most popular Post-Rock bands out there, and I loved them. I then expanded to other groups like This Will Destroy You and God Is An Astronaut. Both were pretty mainstream for post-rock standards. Right now I am listening to Post-Rock bands with probably only 15k views on Youtube, although the music is 100 times better than any of this mainstream pop crap out there in my opinion :P.

Post-rock is music you hear on a lot of TV adverts for nature or stuff like that, i'm sure many of you have heard this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkzCi5mHvkc) or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmXMA34CeoQ) song before on TV, but dont know who it is by (except Sigur Ros perhaps :p). Both are actually quite big in the Post-Rock world.

The bands do tend to have weird or extremely creative names that are very unique and can be quite long. Same goes for song names and albums. For example.. 65daysofstatic have a song called 'The Paris Hilton Sex Tape' and Maybeshewill released a track called 'How to Have Sex With A Ghost' :wtf:

I'd like to share what I think are some of my favourite songs that can be used as an example for people who have never really given Post-Rock a try.. or need something relaxing to listen to at night time :) It really is a very powerful and amazing genre of music. You feel the music, rather than hear it.

This would be my first choice - Maybeshewill - Relative Minors.

This is one of my favourites from a Spanish band I only found a week ago. It feels very 'spacey' and I like how they include bits from the moon landing. Very powerful but too short :p

Sigur RosOh hey, I am SO glad to have stumbled across this thread! :D ..once upon a li'l while ago I, in a somewhat altered state of consciousness :erm: ran my radio tuner up and down the band and lucked out on some out of this world (at the time..) music that was, at the time, just ...wow.

Turns out that on that wondrous :o Saturday night I had found 93.8 (http://www.93-8fm.co.za/), now going by the name of 'Mix FM' running a special on God is an Astonaut (http://superadmusic.com/god/) and Tool (http://www.toolband.com/), both of whose music is currently highly placed in my listening rotation.

As an utter neophyte to the genre, I can't claim that Tool qualify for being in it, but they may well be ..and you may find them to your liking too.

OT but still on music that is IMO *good* to listen to late at night, etcetera, consider Cirque du Soleil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cirque_du_Soleil_discography) albums; a personal fave being Alegria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alegr%C3%ADa_%28Cirque_du_Soleil%29#Music), the rhythm of the opening track (Alegria) is enough to get me on the road to being in a better place when I'm bouncing off my (stress) rev-limiter...

Oh, and Mix FM can be/often IS a *damn* good station to listen to late at night, if you're not in their sadly all too limited radio footprint, they do stream too.

If I might take a guess as to why they aren't widely listened to is for lack of a front man or at least some separated and pronounced musical virtuosity that would act as a sort of draw card for people? At least from what I listened to so far.

Which is not to take away from it as it is something a bit different rather, where all of the instruments work together on an emotion or feel throughout. I can listen to and enjoy it and it definitely feels like it belongs in certain times or moods.

Don't think I can pick up Mix FM here in Cape Town :( I'll see if I can stream it tonight though.

I do have a Tool album on my iTunes library somewhere, haven't exactly got into their music yet, although it might grow on me. I'll give your suggestions a listen tonight.

Post-rock really is a night genre for me at least. During the day i'm into Metal,Hard rock and Alternative rock.

This really reminded (err ok) of Interpol. The vocalist really sounds like the guy from Interpol, and the guitar work was very reminiscent of the Hot Fuss album from The Killers.
