Help Me Access My Nas from anywhere in the world.....

Hi Guys

Ok, so i have a netgear router at home which is connected to my Iburst. It is wifi enabled as so i dont need no pc on when connecting to the internet. Now i have connected my nas to that router and via my mac or ipad i can access those files 100% through the wifi network. I can stream videos or even photos etc. I want to be able to now connect to the nas from anywhere in the world but without having my pc on. Basically i dont want to keep my photos or music on ipad, but when needed i can dial into the nas and take from there using filebrowser.

So as it stands, i have the:

1) Iburst Modem connected to Netgear Router
2) Nas connected to Router
3) All Wifi works 100%

Now help me access that nas from anywhere. Oh and i have no idea on creating a vpn. So step by Step guide would help a lot.

Does your netgear allow you to create a VPN? If so there should be a step-by-step guide online, just google the model number and "create a vpn" or "user manual". Something you will need to do if you don't have a static public IP address is to set up a dynamic name service - www.dyndns.com is a good one, many routers are pre-programmed to look at one of their dynamic ranges, dyndns.org.

Basically your router will update its latest ip address to your dyndns account every time your ISP changes it. Normal DNS servers do not update quickly and there are hoops to jump through (security). Dyndns basically links your IP to a subdomain i.e. http://<yourchosenname>.dyndns.org.

In your VPN client you can then put the http://<yourchosenname>.dyndns.org url in and it will request the IP address from dyndns.

Further notes:
If you do site to site, use aggressive mode (works better with dynamic dns)
If you are extedning your LAN (i.e. same private network range is applied to you over the VPN) remember some protocols weren't designed to have so much latency and get super slow. Shouldn't be an issue of you just stream music
If you create a subnet for VPN users, make sure you set up routing!!

You don't then, normally you get charged extra for the priviledge, sometimes you don't get the option. You can confirm by checking with your ISP (Iburst).
