MNet - censored movies

Hi

Sometimes when I watch MNet late at night, the movies are all censored/strong language is beeped out. What could be the cause of this, considering I don't have parental control set on my MNet decoder?

The other night I recorded a movie ("Wonderland") that was screened at 03h00. It's a movie where strong language was frequently used so you can just imagine how rediculous it was to watch this movie when every 5 seconds there was complete silence.

I called Multichoice and complained about this problem about a year ago. Of course, nobody had a clue what I was talking about and simply said the movie was "bought like that". Huh? I followed this up with the programming manager's office and they said it can't be the movie itself, it must be a technical problem. I swopped my decoder and still sit with the problem.

What could cause this? Different problematic feeds for analogue decoders perhaps?
 
DSTV's movie channels [mnet+mm1+mm2] offer 2 different soundtracks.
Some of the sports channels also do.
Press the yellow audio button the remote to switch between them.

You can set the default audio mode in the menu somewhere.
Mine's set to default to Original.
 
Have you tried to set the language options in the menu - or select the audio button on the remote. You can choose between Language - Family (with swearing blanked out or Original - with the swearwords.
 
I don't have DSTv, only an analogue MNet (Delta 9000) decoder. The brown light is always on (instead of the green light for 'family').
I'm obviously getting the wrong soundtrack on analogue which means it could be a transmission problem too, if they're transmitting the wrong soundtrack to regular decoders on some evenings. There's not much I can set on my own decoder other than switching back 'n forth between the brown/green light.
 
The one that gets me is when they bleep out 'g0d' but they're just too damn lazy and only remove it on the left channel.:confused: Censorship revolving around blasphemy is an archaic practice if you ask me.
 
What the *bleep bleep* are you talking about I've never had and such *bleeping* problems :)
 
i find it stupid that people today are still so offended by common swearwords!

I don't think it is stupid, people just draw the line at different places when it comes to morality and proper conduct.
 
Well, considering I don't want my 2 year old and 5 year old learning naughty words just yet, it really gets my goat that MNET don't censor out '****' and some of the 'lighter' swear words as well.

Thats how they bought the movie, lol, brilliant joke
 
Good point MrG. Most movies are probably just bought from Europe which in turn are told by their American counterparts on which words they must *beep* out.

Completely agree. If parents of whatever religion prefer not to have their children bombarded with words/phrases that degrade their beliefs, that's their right. Some people don't get offended by extremely violent programmes or graphic documentaries, does that mean it should all be uncensored?

Thats why there are supposed to be 2 audio tracks but they often censor the original as well.

Besides, I dont need mnet to act as my moral compass thanks and it's a parents job to monitor what's on, to pay attention to the published rating and then to decide what's right for their children.

i guess that's a fair statement seeing as not everyone is of the christian faith, but still, there are many people who are offended by what they consider to be blasphemous utterances... so, seeing as there is a way to take their considerations into account (via the 2 audio channels), no harm done, right?
(but i agree that there is then no real need to censor the original as well, though)

agreed, and not just for children, but adults too... ;)

Its nothing to do with censorship, its Chioce... the 'bleeping' out is for the kids and judging from your posting, you have either not had kids or none of your kids have walked out the lounge saying profane words like he/she has just been to 'trooper school'.
Its very easy to blame parents... Teenage pregnancy - parents fault, Dicipline - parents fault, Morality - parents fault, teenage suicides - parents fault. ... that excuse is wearing very thin... parents are not miracle workers and cannot watch their kids ALL the time!

If you dont like the censorship, then go Rent DVD's for the month, its cheaper than DSTV/MNET. :mad:

I fully agree! The fact that they sometimes censor the original soundtrack as well boggles my mind. It really frustrates me that MNet is deciding on my behalf what I should or shouldn't hear.

I have no problem with the bleeping out of words as long as I can easily set my decoder to hear the original soundtrack (that is not censored). Unfortunately with an analogue decoder it sometimes happen that they transmit the censored soundtrack instead of the original and there's nothing I can do about it.

That is choice. It's supposed to enable the viewer to either listen to the censored or uncensored version. My complaint is they censor both versions.

They also have parental block in case you dont want to take the risk something inappropriate might come on.

Then again I do have a child but I dont rely upon the tv to be a baby sitter.

I got that part clear... as I said - Choice .... you are welcome the change channels or cancel MNET, no-one is holding a gun to your head... I do agree its pathetic on MNET's part, just send them an email to propose a fix to the problem.
