Anyone know if there are local retailers following suit with the price-cut on the HP TouchPad? Even if it is dead $99 for 9.7" colour tablet is cheap.

Not sure if any store was "officially" selling them here. But it seems like a good buy. I'm sure someone will find a way to put Android onto it soon.

I don't think the TouchPad ever launched in SA...

And BestBuy are now sold out...
Know of any other stores that are selling it for $99.... wouldn't mind ordering one tbh.

HP Experience in Sandton City had them at (wait for it) R7000 on Saturday. They didn't seem to have heard the bad news. If SA retail practices are anythong to fo by, they'll reduce the price by R100 and announce it as a clearance special.

so no place in SA to get it from then?? this does seem like a good deal, if we get the same price of $99

This. Call me a pessimist, but I just don't see the local sharks matching the US prices. They're probably bargaining on saffers being stupid enough to pay full price. And they probably won't be disappointed. Hell, even full price in the US was only about R3600 ($500) for the 16GB. If the locals sell them at the proper clearance price, I'd definitely get one. Hell, even if ours are inflated to R800, I'd get one. Maybe 2. Yhe hardware is excellent and it's only a matter of time before a proper OS gets ported to it.

Take2's more us section still has them at full price. Please post here if that changes.

It is tempting no matter what. Big up yours to local retailers for over inflating.

mwahahhaa - if you think a price of R800 is inflated then you don't know what is involved in importing.
either way it was only bestbuy selling these for $99 - other retailers in the USA are still full price, unless of course amazon.com are also sharks?

A number of other retailers have also sold them at the $99 and $149 price points. They have all sold out very quickly. Amazon does not stock them, but does sell via 3rd parties, some of which have also offered the full price drop.

I havent seen a single one on amazon offered at the full price drop, been watching.
Either way, would really like an explanation of how an item that cost $100 is going to land and get sold in SA for R800

Well you forget that the retailer doesn't get them at $99 and adds their own mark up.

not at all, the ones sold in the US for $99 have been sold at a loss.
either way, look at takealot or take2, all they do is buy from amazon and import, so they will pay whatever the best deal on amazon is, currently the cheapest 16gb is $280. Add international courier fees, dear customs, clearing fees, you are looking at R3000 plus whatever markup they want, even a lousy 10% means they would have to sell it for R3300

Firstly, thank you morkhans for the headsup, had no idea this was going down :( but you made up for that lol :)

Just an update, Round 2 is coming soon :D

While most retailers seem fresh out of HP TouchPad stock after the recent $99 fire sale, don't fret if you missed out on it. Given that it ran on the weekend and the announcement was only made late Friday, we are sure many interested buyers weren't even aware of the sale until it was too late.

HP TouchPad fire sale reignites again on HP website

Well if you believe the reports that HP only managed to sell 25,000 of the odd 270,000 tablets it produced since launch, then you will understand that there is definitely more where that came from. As PreCentral points out, "according to a tweet sent out by an HP employee and an article on International Business Times, HP has a warehouse full of devices that are ready to be shipped out to retail outlets in preparation for part two of the fire sale that's been going on the past few days."

To verify these claims, all you have to do is visit the HP website where you will notice an anomaly. The "Out Of Stock" message keeps getting replaced with "Buy Now" temporarily before reverting back to the former.

Given the high demand behind the HP TouchPad at the moment and hopes of Android 2.3 Gingerbread being ported to it giving it longevity, expect this to go on until the stock is completely gone.

Good luck with grabbing one!

If anyone manages to grab some, please grab extra and let us know (FIRST DIBS :)).

They only got rid of 25000 and there is still ALOT left so don't despair.

Can anyone confirm if HP.com ships to S.A? One can order directly from them if they ship to us.

Would love to get this for some family members :)

This is IMO the biggest firesale of the year, i just wish these guys would produce more and sell it at the same price :(
