Want to buy a hard drive - Sybaritic okay?

I have only bought from Sybaritic once a couple of weeks back, my experience was a good one.

I went with the EFT transfer payment option (to avoid the credit card surcharge), and since Sybaritic was quite close, the option to collect as well.

On a few items I compared Sybaritic pricing to dealer pricing and Sybaritic's profit margin was small and not excessive.
 
I've ordered 2 times from them, very good service every time. They keep you updated on your order - and the courier actually dropped the stuff off at my door right on time :)
 
I am just curious, why would you buy the 500GB one? If you get 2 x 250 GB it works out 30% cheaper and you get double the performance if you run it in raid 0.
 
I thought it is illegal for merchants to add a credit card surcharge.

There is definitely a higher price when paying Sybaritic via credit card and I dunno if it is legal to do so in SA, but it certainly put me off paying via credit card :(

I've had too many hard drives fail on me to want to double the risk by striping data. Besides that the one 500Gig is meant to replace the 3x120 Gig drives I'm running now.

My plan is to install XP afresh on the 500Gig and leave the other drives connected until I migrate all my stuff then sell 2 of the 120Gig drives and keep one of them for a pagefile and rarely used stuff. I'll probably add another 500Gig later and get rid of the last 120Gig drive.
 
Thanks for the input everyone. The Cyberdyne site seems to be under construction at the moment. I think I'll go with Sybaritic although I'm in Cape Town.

it isn't, cyberdyne doesn't have online shop, you need to order via email, you can download the price list from their site bottom-left somewhere and then send them email with the stuff you want and they will send you a quote and then you place an order and they tell you when you can collect

it is a bit clumsy procedure compared to few clicks on an online shopping site, but their service is quite good as well as their prices, so it is worth the effort
 
Yes, I believe Sybaritic is ok, I have not bought from them before but have considered buying parts from them in the past

yes the risk of failure running in raid 0 doubles, but if you have important data you better back it up rather than relying that single drive is less likely to fail

I moved from single drive to raid 0 recently (2 x 250GB) , and the performance is amazing, as you can expect it is doubled
 
There is no point RAID'in home computers is there?
 
I've probably bought at least R5000+ worth of stuff from Sybaritic last year, all went smoothly. I used the Bank Deposit route when paying, which means you can order first without paying and only pay when they actually email you and say they have stock. Only delays i've had was suppliers not having stock [which usually means no one have the stuff anyway].

They even SMS you the tracking number when they ship. So generally have when very impressed with their procedure and how they keep me updated on order status.

if you use your machine for typewriter then yes, there is no point for RAID

but I use mine for quite a few things and often simultaneously so I don't like waiting for the red light to stop flashing ... so raid 0 comes to the rescue
 
There have been a few reviews of single user benefits of RAID 0 with current generation drives and for most tasks there is zero benefit. Only a few games had a noticable performance increase in level load times. It's only really worthwhile if you're working with large files (audio, video, photo etc.).

Personally I run RAID 1 (mirroring) so if one of my drives fail I can keep working with no interruption and replace the faulty drive at my leisure (though RAID 1 is not a replacement for proper backups!).
