Whats all the fuss about Telkom shaping Skype - its a viscious rumour - spoke to Telkom myself and they assured it is not possible.... ya right, i hear you all say.... like they would tell the truth! Believe it cuz its true!

Skype seems to be working better than ever and there are some hot products out now that make the experience even better - check the range of local distributor Even Flow www.evenflow.co.za - very groovy!

Can't wait for the WiFi phone!

Well they lied ... it is certainly possibly to detect Skype on the internet ... you actually asked them ??? ;).

maybe should clarify - from what i heard (it was a bad line!) - the guy explained in all his techiness that they could not identify and target Skype specifically, and if they went after the ports Skype uses then it would screw with others so they don't..... don't shoot the messenger! If you want his contact details send me your email and I reply with his no.
..... and "stoke" what plug? the guys are good - they deserve a mention :)

I would be more relieved if I saw something to the this effect on Telkom's website stating that they support VOIP and are embracing it etc...
 
If Telkom is not shaping Skype then explain to me why Skype works better over dial-up than it does on my DSL line
 
Well, for me on a 192k ADSL line, the quality couldn't be any better. Seriously. An hour long SkypeOut call to the states is better than a normal international call. Hell, it seemed better than a normal local call
 
Ok gotta jump in here.

Skype is not SPECIFICALLY shaped by telkom, but it falls into "non priority" traffic.
This means that when the network is quiet you will get pretty good results. During busy times the prioritization of http / email etc over your skype packets will result in poor to non existant skype.

I am frequently on skype at around 9am to NZ. One can watch the call deteriorate as everyone gets to the office and starts checking email. By 9:30 it is often unusable. If you switch over to unshaped bandwidth then all is well again.

In the latest skype version under options and advanced you can check, display technical info, which will then show you technical details (codec, RTT, packet loss and jitter) if you mouse over the face icon while in a call.
 
I've found that file transfers over skype go alot quicker as soon as i stop a voip call...

Sure the call takes bandwidth, but my transfer is basically dead until i hang up whereafter it shoots up to 15/20KB/s
 
It depends on your connection and NAT / firewall settings. Although Skype is built on P2P technology, the file transfer features are limited.

First test your connection locally and then Internationally. There might be some port / header shaping on international P2P packets. Skyping works fine with really limited bandwidth - approx 5KBps

Do you want to use Skype for telephony / file transfers. If answer is file transfers, remove skype and create another thread discussing File Transfer Programs...
