Southern Africa leads the way with new trends, says just-published report

Erm, "Outside North Africa, Southern and Central Africa has some of the most developed internet country markets on the continent".

What else is there besides North, South, and Central Africa?

Saying that outside of 1 the other 2 only have some of the most developed markets is just ridiculous, I cant follow this at all.

yup, I lost interest and stopped reading about 1/3 through the article.

Egypt probably runs South Africa close with broadband users as they had 82,893 ADSL subscribers in June 2005. How come South Africa is then seen as leading the way when we have about the same number of subscribers as Egypt but the cost of ADSL is so much more expensive?

"Broadband internet access (ADSL) in Algeria is a fast-growing Market, so experts say, who predict a sharp increase in demand and bet on its growth in the next few years to reach some 4 million subscribers by 2008. In January 2006, some 290,000 have access to ADSL, only two years after its first ever launch in Algeria, under the terms of a convention signed in November 2003 between Algérie Telecom (AT) and the Vocational Distance Learning Establishment (EEPAD)."

One thing did tweak an extra heartbeat though
At least three countries in the region are using satellite providers rather than connect via Telkom to SAT3 because of the high prices it charges on the fibre. Elsewhere in the world, fibre is generally cheaper than satellite for higher volume traffic.

There are many other... Tunisia kicks ass on broadband... but the reports is so bad...

Apart from North, East and South, there is an upturn or people moving west.wards..... that says jack to me.

I think it is important to note that Algeria has a population of 34.4 million (less than SA) and a GDP of $ 101 billion (less than half that of SA).

Cant wait for the ICASA hearings :D

Agreed - that's real convenient! Sounds Telkom/Guavamint centric this article. Making the telecoms crisis in SA sound like it doesn't exist.
