Where to buy XLR audio equipment?

Hi,

I'm looking for a place around Stellenbosch, or online, where I can get hold of XLR audio equipment (cables & adapters in particular), so that we can hook up our PC's (both 3.5mm inputs & outputs) to our Yamaha LS9 mixing console?
The companies has to be VAT registered.

Good prices on DI boxes would also be appreciated.

I'm gonna try StellenSound (part of Faithful Computers) and Eikestad Audio & Aircon, but I don't have very high hopes on finding what I need with them...

Best bet would be a shop that sells music instruments. Bothers(?) in Bellville comes to mind.

Otherwise you should find the connectors and cables at an electronics components shop. Try Yebo (Bellville) and/or Communica (Woodstock).

Failing that, I *should* have some XLR connectors somewhere. PM me if you get stuck.

I'll have a look at Yebo & Communica for connectors, because we need to replace connectors every now and then too.

soundz is very expensive.

I haven't looked at their prices in recent years. You can also look at Mantech and RS components for the connectors and wires. Mantech will be way cheaper, but their catalog is not very detailed, so sometimes it is a bit of a gamble, since you don't really know what exactly you are buying...

Ideally, you would want to convert the PC's output to differential for the XLR. The easiest way to do that is with an audio transformer...

Could you perhaps give me an example of that?

Currently we have a 3.5mm stereo jack to 2x 6.3mm mono jacks, which is then converted to with 2x 6.3mm mono sockets to XLR male jacks.
Depending on the noise level coming from the PC, we add a DI box with dual XLR inputs & dual XLR outputs.
 
Thanks a million for those diagrams P924! We would most definitely make use good of those to convert the cables from unbalanced to balanced.

The DI box can also be used to do it, but its rather expensive at like ~R700.
 
Well, the DI box consists mostly of audio transformers, some switches and some resistors, with the transformer being the important part...

So that we can claim VAT back!?

For now I've just asked my friend in CBD to see if he can source the equipment for me, since I don't have the time to drive around in Cape Town during the week.
