ATI Radeon HD 6770 VS ATI Radeon HD 6790

Now to most people the choice would be obvious. But this is a new card I want to buy for my fiance.
Nothing fancy just something that has a good ratio between money = pixel processing
I also don't want a nvidia card. I want one of these two. The only other thing I can think of is that she's got a 470W PSU in her computer.

The 6770 goes for R1098
The 6790 goes for R1393

Your opinions?
 
You can get the Club 3D HD6790 1GB for just under R1300 (excl shipping).

Could you please find out more regarding the rest of the system specs, and the exact model & brand of the PSU?

If its an unknown brand PSU, then I can't recommend anything above the HD6770.
 
Do you just want a card so that the machine can do the usual MS + facebook, or for some casual gaming as well?

What resolution will she be gaming at? If it's 1920*1080 or higher get the 6790, if less the 6770.

first thing i noticed is that she have 470watt , sounds like a giga**** odin :(

anyway back on topic the hd 6970 is well worth it as it based on barts core, where the 6770 is based on the old 5770.

Guys PLEASE don't confuse the HD6970 & HD6790 in this thread!

The HD6970 costs R3k+ and requires a decent 500W+ PSU, where as the HD6790 can work on a decent 400W PSU and it costs R1300+.

It would help to know what kind of games & also the resolution/detail at which the games will be played.

I got my MSI Radeon HD 6850 OC edition for R1299 last month from Wootware. If you are patient they might have another special soon.
 
I bought her a 23" screen the other day so she plays on 1980 x 1080. She plays games such as Minecraft, Left 4 dead 2, Modern Warfare 1 & 2, I'm trying to get her into Deus Ex HR now. So her old 4670 won't hold up to that anymore.

I buy almost all my stuff from takealot.com as the free shipping just makes it so much better the more you buy from them. They sell the 6790 for R1393 and the 6770 for R1096 I believe. I'm going with the 6790.

And whatever you guys say about the gigabyte ODIN PSU's might be true. But I've used this specific one for 3 years in a area where lightning cuts the power almost every week. And it's never let me down.
 
Those cheap Gigabyte Odin / Huntkey / Coolermaster Extreme Power Plus PSU's work fine if you only pull like half of its rated output.

The HD6790 requires quite a lot more power than the HD4670! The HD6790 is rated for 150W TDP, where as the HD4670 is only rated for 59W TDP. She'll also need 2x 6-pin PCI-E power connectors from her power supply for the HD6790 graphics card to work.

Could you try to find out what brand & model PSU she's got, and also what CPU she's using? With that info we can give a good estimation whether the card would work fine with the PSU or whether it'll be dodgy.

I highly doubt that. My HD6850 which uses more power only has 1x 6 pin power connector.

Uhm no.

The HD6850 is rated for 127W TDP, where as the HD6790 is rated 150W, which means that the HD6850 will use 1x 6-pin PCI-E and the HD6790 will require 2x 6-pin PCI-E.

That can not be right, the 6850 uses about the same power then a 460 786mb and that has 2x6 pins.
The 6790 can not use more power than a GTX 460 which is a more powerfull card might I add.

I know the 6790 has 2x6 pins and the 5770 has 1x6 pin.
Some 6850's has 1x6pin and other have 2x6 pin's

My research says the 6790 and the 6850 and the GTX 460 768mb uses about the same power.

  2. HD6790 - 150W TDP
  3. GTX460 768MB - 150W
  4. GTX460 1GB - 160W

It seems that the image that I saw of the HD6790 PCB with 2x 6-pin plugs wasn't the HD6790, because its webpage says the following:"Minimum of 500 Watt or greater power supply with one 75W 6-pin PCI Express® connectors"
So both the stock speed Club3D HD6850 & HD6790 cards just requires 1x 6-pin PCI-E like you guys said.

BUT
AMD's webpage says: "500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors"

It looks like it differs from Brand.

I know the Club3d 6790 has 2x6 pins.
And the 5770/6770 has 1x 6 pin.

But nonetheless the Club3d 6850 is only R150 more and is more than R150 more powerful, actually about 15%.
