I am currently a Vodacom hoar and they are ripping me off blind!!

I am considering ADSL - Can somebody give me the lowdown of which Co to use and who has best rates ? :confused:

It's pretty much dependent on your bandwidth needs...

If you need to download the interwebs to your array of hard drives and don't really care about performance that much, then uncapped options from the likes of MWEB and Openweb are the way to go. If you're on the other side of the fence (you don't want/need a large bandwidth allocation but you care about latency/performance), then capped options from Afrihost or WA are the way to go. Of course, you can also grab an uncapped account and a prepaid capped account if you want the best of both worlds.

I just run a home-office and surf the web a lot. Currrently on My Gig 2 from Vodacom on 3G. I often run out of gigs and get a huge bill.
 
first get analog line from telkom, if you do not have one all ready.

then apply for adsl line, 1mb line is nice. ( or just get telkom deal where you get 1mb line for 3months free with a router)

then when you have adsl get a adsl router, range from R200 and more.

Then choose a isp.

mweb or openweb gold for uncapped.

capped afrihost is decent.
 
Yip, also what kind of budget are we talking here?

Do you have an POST paid analog phone line installed at your house?
 
Yes I have a Telkom business line. R149 for 2 Gigs at moment. Was paying R349 for same package. What does the router do which was suggested above ??
 
a router takes analog signal and convert to to digital for your pc to use, then you get internet :)
 
Good, then how many gigs do you use a month?

Would OP need to get business DSL on a business line? Surely not?
 
If you have 8ta reception at your home and use less then 10GB a month, 8ta is the way to go.

If you don't have 8ta reception, Cell C is well priced.

ADSL only becomes viable when you download a fairly large amount of data due to the line rental costs.
 
+1 for Loopin's post.

If you don't need a low latency (like for gaming) or a big cap, then ADSL would be a poor choice if you're living in an area that has good HSDPA reception from either Cell C or 8ta.
 
Ja loopin and Pada are right.

If you're doing ok with 2gigs, then getting 8ta's 10gig for R199/month will be like heaven. Otherwise, if you can deal with 5gigs/month, CellC is good too, plus its prepaid so you wont need to stress about any bill.

DSL line rental ALONE for a 1mbps line is minimum R250 (I wouldn't even look at 384kbps, that'll annoy you for a business). Then you still need to add data above that.

I would suggest starting on a 10GB package. You will probably be doing a bit more surfing & DL a few things you did not before then I would not suggest looking at less.

Do not sign 24 month contracts, then you can always changne it a bit later on 'til you know what cap will be good for you or if uncapped will be better.

Nice, then maybe we can just give some options and prices: Here are a few from my side...

3G options
8ta 3g 10gig = R199/month
CellC 3g 5gig = R3k (once off including modem)

ADSL
Mweb uncapped 384k INCL line = R349/month
Mweb uncapped 1mbps line INCL line = R588/month (sign up now and get the first 3 months free and free DSL modem)
I've intentionally left out WA Home connect deals, as they have (IMO) ridiculous deals with their peak times data amount so their home connect deals aren't suitable for a business, here are some business options from them http://www.webafrica.co.za/business/adsl/business-complete/

Maybe someone else can include any other deals from the other major ISP's, Afrihost and Openweb etc

Umm for low usage people under 16 gigs they have the best value for money and the most stable internet and latency so explain your statement.

For the OP go for the do broadband accounts if you do not want uncapped reasons as stated above.
 
Just make sure you don't sign ANY form of contract for ADSL, and you'll be fine. That's the most important thing of all. If you are unhappy with the Telkom ADSL line, or unhappy with your ISP, you can cancel at any time (1 months notice at worst).

Usually if you take a deal that throws in a free modem, or a free 'something', the catch is that you are locking yourself into a contract.

The best option IMO is to sign up for the free ADSL promotion from Telkom. You get an ADSL modem + 1mbps line + 5GB data for 3 months. This deal REALLY is a no-strings-attached deal (well done Telkom). During the 3 months time, if you are unhappy, you can just cancel, and continue with 3G. You even get to keep the ADSL modem.

For business purposes, I highly recommend ADSL over 3G. Even more so if you have multiple users wanting to connect to the internet. The worst thing you want is to have a weak/poor 3G signal when you need send that all important email to seal the deal, or you've run out of expensive mobile data, and you start getting charged OOB rates (as you already know very well).

Make the switch to ADSL. You won't go wrong. As the months go on, your monthly usage will gradually climb higher, and you canthen change packages or even upgrade line speed, to suit your needs and budget. Use 3G for when you need to be mobile.
