Any idea when somerset west will get 10mb?

they were trialling 8mb here 3years ago...
 
Only one of the dslams in the area were made 10meg so far. But at the moment I think any further upgrade has been put on hold, as most of the dslams in S/West are experiencing very bad performance at the moment. It's as though there is over congestion on them.

Telkom did issue a network planing change for the end of this month, for S/West, so either it will fix the congestion issues or bump everyone up to fast speed.

I wish they would sort something out soon. We have nine ADSL lines now doing close to a terabyte per month at this point, but I have certainly seen the last two that were installed drop in line speed. So not sure if we are suffering from congestion in some way, or just crappy copper, etc. Moving to 10mbit's will likely be a disaster if they don't upgrade properly.
 
I know about the DSLAM @ the mall thats dead. That whole office park behind the mall is without ADSL. rather a large fkup

The reason I'm itching to get 10mbd is because of these nice stats

I must admit, I really believed that SWest would be one of the first places to be upgraded. I really thought that would be many people using 4Mbit ADSL, and so Telkom would be itching to milk them for more money.
 
actually, there is no price diff between 4mb and 10mb. If theres a bunch of 4mb users, then telkom is already getting all they can from them. no need to upgrade them :)
 
You guys are lucky to be getting 4mb.

My Folks are only able to get 1MB now and they are in a fairly new developed area.
 
The problem is that there is no telkom infrastructure in the outlying developed areas yet.

Eventually telkom will put up satellite dslams, and things will improve.
 
I am resurrecting this thread as today in the Heldervue/Spanish Farm area of Somerset West we had quite a bit of Telkom downtime (phone and adsl). Six of our 4mbit lines are still down, while two have come on again this afternoon.
The REALLY interesting thing is that all the 4mbit lines that are still "off" are now syncing at between 8Mbits and 12Mbits (down) and between 900Kbits & 1Mbit upstream. The two that came back up and that are working are still on 4Mbits.
THIS was is really kewl to see and brings me hope. All our internet packages on those lines from multiple ISP's should auto upgrade to the speed change (including the Netgear modems), but currently none of them are receiving their IP addresses and connecting. I just hope this isn't testing only, and they will go back to 4Mbits when it is over :-(

So just wondered if anyone else in this area noticed some Telkom ADSL downtime today? Possibly check your sync speed?

Yup. I was at clients in Heldervue and noticed downstream of 12229kbps. But no ISP authentication
 
Ok, well I phoned a Telkom guy who came to look at a DSL fault some days ago, and he said he will check on the issue just after 8am tomorrow. Hopefully, whatever upgrade or test they are trying to do will be resolved by the morning. If they are doing an upgrade, I wonder how long it takes... a few minutes or hours? Possibly they have upgraded but unfortunately something is just not correct, so we may have to get a downgrade :-(
 
If you guys are synchronizing at almost 10Mbps, I would suggest that you guys take a look at your SNR margins and phone Telkom to reduce your speed slightly until you have like 10-12dB SNR margins on both your upstream & downstream connections.

If you don't do this, then you'll have faster peak download speeds, but lots of stability issues - so in the long run your average speed will be worse than what you'll get when downgrading to a stable speed.
 
I saw about 6 telkom vans @ the telkm tower on steynsrust road yesterday afternoon. I'm pretty sure they're testing higher speed adsl. Or they chnaged something and accidentally forgot to put the soft limit back to 4096 (or 10240).

The adsl line syncs, and SNR is excellent. My client is less than 1km from the exchange, so i dont think signal quality is a problem.

The problem that I do have is that the adsl modem is no longer authenticating. Its stuck @ initialize LCP
 
I looked at my slowest and fastest syncing modem's that were syncing, but not authenticating.

Slowest (8251 down / 879 up):
- Line Attenuation = 43db (down) / 22.8db (up)
- Noise Margin = 5.9db (down) / 6.9db (up)

Fastest (15419 down / 1019 up):
- Line Attenuation = 35db (down) / 15.5 (up)
- Noise Margin = 4.85db (down) / 14db (up)
 
out of interest, what business do you do in spanish farm that requires 6 adsl lines? :)
 
Actually more than 6 lines. :-) It's a private University (though we are not allowed to be called "university" as we are private). 350 students... with dormitories... plus 40 lecturers & administrators....
We do have a leased line and wireless, but it doesn't compare to the ADSL throughput.
 
ah nice...

now if only they would restore the frikkin adsl
 
I have confirmed another two people/places in the area have the same problem. They don't know how to check their line sync speed, etc, but they are dead in the water. A Telkom technician that works my area sometimes, yesterday said I should give him a call today if the problem is still here... but he ain't answering. I think it is time to phone Telkom itself :-(

EDIT: All Telkom can do is confirm that there is a problem with the Heldervue Exchange, and Technicians are fixing the problem.

Ok ALL our lines are back on about 1 hour ago. ALL the ones that were syncing at the highe speeds are still syncing at those speeds. The lines that are syncing between 8 and 10 Mbits are getting those speeds between Webafrica in CPT, and JHB with Telkom and Vodacom. The fastest one I have going at 15Mbits, is only gettinga about 2Mbits, so I think that one will have to be brought down possibly. Anyway, I can confirm we are up for about an hour now with some modems able to use higher speeds.
