Laptop prices may jump by 15% in South Africa: Industry player

Deflate the value of the rand even further, it's good for exports right? I mean, it's not like we have to import anything ever. *g*

Can we expect a 15% decrease if the rand returns to it's previous levels?

I'm more worried about the Petrol price shooting up, to be honest.

Crsp. I need a new notebook before the end of the year / early next year.... :(

The Notebook Company ... ye gods... talk about crawling out of the woodwork.

We are now going to be inflation's bitch.

Now I want to change my name to Inflation :D

OT: What will the effect be on the repo rates if the rand continues to weaken and inflation continues to rise?

Although the finance minister said they would not increase interest rates if inflation rises from mostly only push factors like increase in petrol prices, I can't see them having a choice if it starts to get out of hand.

They will be forced to increase the repo rate if the rand keeps weakening.

Rates will go up to encourage foreign investment (capital inflow) and to curb inflation

At the beginning of the year I predicted pretol prices to rise to the R11 to R12 range by end of year. Looks like I was right.

When the Rand strengthened during the first half of the year government used the opportunity of having cheaper import costs and lower oil prices to raise taxes on petrol which effectively kept the price of petrol relatively flat. This is why the cost of petrol did not decline in line with the cost of oil...

It was pretty clear back then that the Rand would not remain as strong as R7 to the $. Now we are seeing it around R8 to the $ and it may weaken even further. Taxes have however increased. Thus, expect a hefty increase in petrol prices over the next few months. If the $ price of oil would also increase to $120 a barrel while the Rand weakens to 8.5 we could easily see the price of petrol to jump to R14 or more.

This makes me scared :(

Me too, unfortunately it would only be the beginning as high petrol costs would result in inflation for other items and particularly food. I really think though that R14 or more is the absolute worst case scenario for this year. Most likely we will see prices to rise to a level in the region of R11 to R12.

@R10/l + 40c/km toll on the gauteng highways and we will effectively be paying close to R14/l without even factoring in maintenance cost and other taxes.
