Legal responsibility of a BB owner

As in Bulletin board, not the gun :p
I want to start a open discussion board on my site, but a recent even has me worried. I frequent the BikeSA board and it closed yesterday because of legal complaints received by the owner regarding posts made by some daft Members. :mad:
How do you set up a board and make it clear that people on it express their own opinion / make their own claims in such a way that you are covered legally?
 
make use u have a nasty terms and conditions at the footer of your page.
 
That's the plan. I just want to know whether those actually absolve you from legal responsibility.
 
The idea is you should keep an eye on what people are posting. It's not a good idea to have an unmoderated board. If thiings get out of hand, lock topics, or even delete posts if necessary. Ban repeat offenders. You have the facilities at hand, it shouldn't be too difficult.
Although you can't be responsible for what people post, you can still be responsible by allowing it to get out of hand.
