MTN and iBurst to partner on LTE?

is Thami Mtshali that desperate? MTN to the rescue?? Why did WBS never built their own 3G network?

There are many options:
Government regulations.
Too many 3G offers.
Too expensive.
Poor leadership

Or the cynical view of:
Daddy's company does 3G (poorly) so lets not compete.

At least they're jumping onto the LTE.
 
Clever iBurst, very clever. They know that ICASA will delay assigning 2600 MHz and then there's the whole issue of ICASA being too incompetent to properly assign it in the first place. They're about to coin big from this if the operators are desperate enough.

It is isn't it!! They can rent out the use of the frequency, but I wonder if they will partner with one provider or look to offer a service to all and then try to leverage existing infrastucture kind of like the model proposed for the digital divident or if they will just sell the use of the frequency directly to say MTN. Imagine how great it would be if they did a more open model allowing multiple vendors to rent service.

I wonder what sort of range and tower density they will get with LTE and 1800MHz, also anyone know offhand how much frequency Iburst have allocated to them i.e. how much throughput would they be able to achieve?

MTN SA Karel Pienaar has scotched rumours that the mobile operator is in talks to buy Wireless Business Solutions (WBS), the parent company of wireless operator iBurst.

Pienaar tells TechCentral that MTN has held exploratory discussions with iBurst, but an acquisition is “highly unlikely”. He says the operator is talking to a number of industry players, including Sentech, about getting access to additional spectrum. It’s also engaging with the Independent Communications Authority of SA about the issue.
