WD, Seagate or Hitachi? Which is the best?

I'm about to buy a new harddrive, probably a 250GB SATA2 drive, since my 160GB Maxtor just died. Now I'm wondering, which is the best? I'm deffenetly not getting another Maxtor, since this is the third one I'v had problems with.

So, performance and reliability wise, which should I go for? :confused:
 
all those come with 3 year warrentees i normally use WD but know ppl using Hitachi and Seagate with no probs so far in 7 years i only had 1 WD crash so i go with WD.
 
As good as WD can be, I've just had too many returns with WD. Seagate has hardly ever given me trouble.
 
They're all good, I like WD as a matter of personal preferance.

Crash history as I remember it:

Maxtor: many
Fujitsu: 5
IBM: 3
Seagate 4
Western Digital: 2
Samsung: 1 (haven't seen / sold many though)
Other: Quite a few.

Maxtor : lost count
WD: 1 (my fault)
Samsung : better than Maxtor but also lost count
Seagate: 4
Fujitsu: 6 desktop and 9 laptop drives
Hitachi : 1

Yes they do but only in some of them, Alienware also use Hitachi in their Machines
 
Dont go for anything other than Seagate. People I know have had all sorts of other drives blow up mostly Maxtors and WD's but Seagates have never given me or people I converted problems.

Seagate = Bullet proof drives.

Been running seagates since some of the first 1GB drives. Had a 1GB then 2 40Gb's and now the 2 160's(One IDE one SATA). Nothing ever goes wrong.
 
And performance? No major differences between the three brands?

Seagate's are quite reliable, I'v got a 2GB seagate that is like 10 years old and still running, my father sometimes uses it for some old DOS stuff.

So nobody's had any major problems with Hitachi's?

Fujitsu / Maxtor / Bangsum - they're wonderful as paperweights!

Never tried Hitashi

WD - 12 returns out of 32odd sold (past 5 years)
Seagate - 3 returns out of 45odd sold (past 5 years)

Several of the WD's arrived making noises, so they didnt even reach the customer. Drive control blamed it on bad handling during shipping...

Thats because all Drive Control WD products are grey imports. Thats why they are always cheaper. (take a barcode from one of their drives- send it to [email protected] and they will say they no longer have a record of that drive)
 
WD are quite a bit faster than seagate.. which is pretty much one of the slowest drives available, but it shoiuld make much difference that you'll notice unless you're going for the WD raptor 150GB.
Even maxtors are much faster than Seagates, and they're dirt cheap, but a maxtor of mine just blew a week ago so yep, they suck.
 
On strange thing that I have noticed about Seagates are that their PATA drives are all only ATA-100, compared to the Maxtors that are ATA-133.

Unless someone can give me a really good reason why I shouldn't go for the Seagate SATA2 250GB, I think thats the one im going with.

My thoughts as well.
5 years in computer terms is a long time.

The Hitachi has a 3 year warranty and a price of about R920.

I'd go with any of those brands, but in order of preference: Seagate, WD then Hitachi.
 
another vote for, seagate. you can't go wrong with a company confident enough to supply a five year warranty on there hdd products
