Johannesburg - University of KwaZulu-Natal principal, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba has been elected vice-president of the International Council for Science.

Makgoba said being elected vice-president of the prestigious Paris-based International Council for Science was inspiring and humbling.

"These are the horizons one dreams of. Having the opportunity to lead and coordinate research issues of a global nature, is daunting and a huge responsibility - but at the same time exciting, yes even mind-blowing," said Makgoba in a statement.

The council was formed in 1931 to promote international scientific activity.

Makgoba will occupy the position for three years and he will be required to attend its meetings in Paris. He will also be involved in the planning of international interdisciplinary scientific programmes.

This is the type of news I love to hear!

Finally Africans of all colors, sizes and shapes can have something to be proud of as we get older. News like this needs to be front page news in my opinion!
 
How was he chosen? I'd like to look into that a bit first before accepting how appropriate it is...

This fellow is not good news. You might recall the whole palaver when he was accused by Wits academics of falsifying his CV. He has also been responsible for much of the decline of UKZN in recent years. Some comments from one article (of many):

Makgoba became aloof (from academics), preferring to centralise power and working with ineffectual administrators and an under-staffed, inexperienced and non-performing human resources division. A legacy of this administration is its poor human relations management and the sinking of staff morale across the board. The number of lawsuits against academics and the whole saga around academic freedom which focused media attention on UKZN for all the wrong reasons should have been enough to bid farewell to Makgoba. Makgoba called white academics baboons and suggested that academics are prima donnas.

Yeah. If F.face Makgoba from UKZN is involved, this ‘International Science Board’ is micky-mouse.

The world; at least the African world and liberals, is so eager to jump on and glorify any black 'intellectual' without caring to verify their authenticity. Like that Nigerian guy who claimed to have invented the internet :rolleyes:

Don't get me wrong - there are good black scientests in various fields in the US, but the ones from Africa itself are all a bunch of frauds.

An extract from the pen of • Blessing J. Karumbidza of The Witness. He completed his PhD at the University of KwaZulu-Natal where he held various teaching and student-development supporting roles between 1999 and 2009.

Concerned members of staff at the university will have to stop this reappointment and protect the university one way or the other. Otherwise they have another agonising five years ahead of them during which they will continue to pay for Makgoba’s exile from Wits University. The other option is that those employable elsewhere will have to vote with their feet. But, in doing so, Makgoba wins. He can recruit an army of young, clueless and non-critical junior staffers who would probably come from the mickey-mouse programmes created under him. They would worship him and run full-page adverts of how truly transformed UKZN has become with no senior and experienced white professors and promising critical black intellectuals, but with a congregation of hero-worshipping wannabe academics at his mercy.
