Consumers to ICASA LLU committee: 'Give us Naked ADSL now'

The moment this happens we can have true competition in the VoIP arena. For now Telkom scores because every consumer is forced to take a telephone line if they want it or not.

Exactly the reason why fighting Telkom's monopoly is a good thing.

In the mind of the paranoid consumer, sure. But in reality, two things will happen should this occur:

1. It would be such obvious and fragrant abuse of monopoly power that Telkom would be hauled before the courts very quickly.

2. Consumers would start migrating away quicker..LLU implies that you might not have to use Telkom for the line rental any more.

IF you are hooked up to the 5 or so exchanges the ISP's focus on...

Yes, but does it set prices at which Telkom is allowed to lease out the LL? They can always just charge the ISP's higher prices..

Well did you make a submission to ICASA in this regard?

Did you go to the discussion being held today?

Did you make any effort AT ALL?
 
I don't understand why anyone would want naked ADSL. That just opens up the door for different pricing on different speeds. There should be line rental, and that's it. No differentiation between voice and ADSL. That is the way it is here in the UK. £11.25 per month. Your ISP can then limit your connection speed if you choose to have 1Mbps instead of 4Mbps or 20Mbps.

They are to be applauded for all this hard work and taking the effort, where others are content to just sit in their arm chairs and throw stupid comments around.

Maybe you don’t know how this came about. MyBroadband and Ellipsis gave consumers a voice...It is the view of consumers which was presented at ICASA, not the view of MyBroadband or Ellipsis. Consumers were asked for feedback, and it is this feedback which Sam presented.

If you listened to the presentation you would also have heard that Sam did not answer questions from the panel, but said that she will ask the feedback from consumers, and then tell ICASA what consumers say.

If you have a better model to give consumers a regulatory voice it will be great.
