i have 2 gigs of ram .....

pc will start to lag, you need some type of page file for memory dump.

Min is 2Mb - PC will be slow
Rec is 786Mb - Pc will run but slower that anything higher


You cant turn it off so that its 0Mb

Try make sure it is another physical hdd and not on a logical partition on the same drive.
 
I remember at some Rectron roadshow or something like that a guy from Gigabyte talked about a PCI card that you can put upto 4Gigs of ram in, then connect it via SATA and use it like a very fast harddrive. Apparently when they installed WinXP on it, it managed to boot in 4sec! :eek:

Wouldnt something like that be the ideal place to put your page file?

Umm, if your 'HDD' is RAM and you put your pagefile on it, then you might as well not have a pagefile...

What is the best sized page file to have? Does hdd size affect your choices?

I am running Windows XP Pro, have 1 gig DDR400 RAM and two 80 gig hdds...

The ultimate question.
I have read so many reviews and threads about this topic and yet I have never found a clear answer.
I also have 1GB of Ram and I have set my ram as follows.
1536MB Initial Size
3072MB Maximum Size.

Most people recommend that the Initial(or minimum) size be the same as the maximum size, like 1024-1024 for instance.

You could also not worry about the whole thing and let windows take charge.
I suspect if you are a gamer and/or over clocker or just like to get under the hood of your operating system, then that is out of the question.

I usually set min and max pagefile sizes to the same value, typically around 1.5 times the amount of RAM. I place it on a separate physical hard drive, if possible. I also defrag the page file (with Pagedefrag).
 
Once youve figured out how big you want the page file size, and you have some unused space on the drive, create a FAT16 partition and place the file in there. FAT16 ( and 12 ) doesnt have the processing overhead that fat32/ntfs has.

End result is your swapfile is marginally faster.

I also have 2 gigs of RAM and my PC doesnt page at all, so you should get away with no page file. All depends on the memory requirement of your apps though.
 
ok cool. Will give that s hot. Have set it to min and max 1536...

Will let u know how it performs...Am surely not going to let windows manage anything if i can at all help it :-)
 
Another trick to use, is to just get rid of the pagefile everytime you shutdown your machine

2 benefits
1) never need to defrag it, as it is recreated at boot up
2) if you tajke a ghost image of the system it will be a quite a lot smaller, as it will have no pagefile:-)

Besides voodoo magic etc as discussed on all forums, pagefile size should be 1.5x system ram size.
 
If you are using 2 parallel ata hard drives then they must be on separate ide channels for there to be a noticeable difference if you are putting your swap file on a different hard drive to your windows installation.

Con of having it recreated - you cant use system restore.

Cant say I have ever bothered with sys restore, but also cant see how this can interfere with it. Got any links to give me on this pls?...interested...
