Q6600 to i5 2500k

Worth it? Upping a Q6600 to i5 2500k? Im currently using an XFX HD 5850 card, games like Starcraft 2 runs poorly, its not smooth at all.
 
Set the graphics details on lowest and see if the game is still running slow. If it is still running slow, then you'd know that it is the CPU that is causing it.

Btw, are you overclocking your Q6600 at all? I'd reckon that if you OC that CPU to 3.4GHz, that you can keep it for a while longer.
 
I have OCed the thing to 3.0Ghz, maybe its just not stable, I don't want to shlep around with OCing too much though, im not sure, but everything I play has these incredibly irritating jitters, smooth then jitters for a split second. Battlefield 3 just down right froze for 10 seconds, and then continues on.

I tried to play that RIFT mmo this morning, again, I get about 20-30fps, XFX 5850 screaming away loudly, but not even making a dent in that game, Thats just k@k.

How much RAM are you running? The jitters issues screams "more ram please"
 
In the link I posted even the OC'd Q6600 @3ghz struggled with an average 31fps. I dont understand why people are recommending that, especially when the OP has said the chip is already OC'd

3.0GHz seems to be too little. I ran SC2 (a lot) without any problems on a Q6600 at 3.6GHz, 4GB RAM, HD6850. In fact I can't tell much of a difference with my Q9550 @ 3.6GHz and HD6970.

If OP has R3k to drop on something that can be achieved for much less, then by all means go ahead.
 
Thanks for the advice guys, if anyone wants a Gigabyte dd3 775 mobo with a Q6600 G0 for R1100 let me know, also pickup only in Centurion. Thanks.
 
some games r jus poorly optimised. the q6600 is a decent processor.i'm jamming the witcher 2 on it an facing no problems with a geforce 9800gt.

SC2 definitely works perfectly on ultra settings on a Q6600 @ 3.6GHz, just saying.

you got the money, just get a 2500k and get done with it

running 4.5 stable and never looked back

I recently asked this exact same question. Ended up OC'ing my Q6600 to 3.0Ghz where it is currently very happy at. Upgrading to a 2500k will cost a hint over R4k, if buying proper hardware, which I don't mind, but after the OC it's handling itself well enough. I'll probably upgrade when Ivy Bridge drops.
 
1024x768 Running that native oempf what a waste of money. The lower the resolution the more the work is on the cpu. The higher you need to clock it. Higher the resolution less stress on the cpu as the gpu got more work to do. A cpu running 3+ is a happy cpu with modern gpus. If your cpu is bottlenecking put more load on the card so it can slow a bit down and the cpu can catch up.

^this. pftttttttt! The Q9550 cost more than the 2600k lol. Cpus dont get cheaper when they get older. It cost intel more to make that chip because its bigger than the latest cpus which blows it out of the water frankly

Do you have some benches to support this statement? I ask because I'm leaning slightly towards the "You don't know what the hell you are talking about" area, but if you have supporting documentation, I'd be happy to change my point of view towards the "I'll go eat my own shoe now".
