Oops Sony :p

TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp will recall 1.6 million of its Bravia brand LCD televisions worldwide after several incidents of TV sets emitting smoke or parts melting due to faulty components, a company official said on Wednesday.
The 11 incidents all took place in Japan, but the faulty parts may affect TV sets sold around the world, the company said in a news release.
There have been no reports of injuries or of damage to anything other than the televisions, Sony said.
The televisions subject to recall were manufactured in 2007 and 2008 and were mostly sold in Europe and the United States, although some were also sold in Japan and other parts of the world, a Sony spokeswoman said. The company will issue an advisory to customers on its websites and by e-mail.

This has got to be one of the most incompetent global companies ever.

Sad for Sony, but which other company would do a recall on just a 0.0006875% failure rate???
Car and airplane manufaturers normally only wait untill many people is killed before they might do a recall.

No news on which models yet?

Sony says has received 11 such reports in Japan, though none involved injuries or damage beyond the TVs. The models subject to the recall in Japan are the Bravia KDL-40X5000, KDL-40X5050, KDL-40W5000, KDL-40V5000 and KDL-40V3000.

The defective part – an inverter transformer used for LCD backlights – is also used in models sold overseas. But Sony says it has not received reports of similar problems.

Every manufacturer runs into problems, not just Sony. I have many Sony products and they are fantastic. I even have an old (about 7 years old) Sony digital camera that died last year. A quick Google search showed that this particular model had a batch of faulty CMOS sensors and that Sony would repair it for free. I took the camera into an affiliated Sony repair store and they fixed the problem, for free, on a 6 year old device.

Toyota had a recall recently but that doesn't mean they are incompetent. Things need to be put into perspective.

Viva Sony, flaws and all.
