PC / LAPTOP for Sister for Photoshop & Scanning

Hi All,

Please can you assist me in making an informed choice concerning a PC for my sister or a laptop and a scanner.

Basically she is wanting to digitize all our old family photos and has already spent a big sum of money at foto first having them scanned and now would rather do them herself.

So first off the scanner.... its between canonscan 9000f or hp scanjet g4050 photo scanner... What is your opinion?

Next is the hardware used to edit / save those scans.

Budget is R6500...

PC = i3 maybe? GPU?

Would a laptop be a better choice?

Any help would be appreciated...

You'll really struggle to get a decent desktop with a keyboard, mouse, screen and Windows license for the R6500.

For R6500, I would suppose that you should be able to get a reasonable laptop with a Core i5 CPU, 4GB RAM, dedicated graphics card and Windows Home Premium x64 at the very least.

^^ You might just want to upgrade that laptop's RAM. The only thing that I have against that laptop is its resolution, but some people prefer that resolution on the relatively small screen.

Laptop RAM is very cheap, and you won't void the warranty when you add new RAM to it, since it is usually 1 screw on the bottom of the laptop that you have to loosen to insert/replace the RAM.
eg. 2GB laptop RAM for R156 incl shipping & VAT.
Like I bought 2x 4GB of notebook RAM the other day for R408 incl shipping & VAT.

For 6.5k you can get a much better pc that will be more powerful.

The top one looks a winner with 4gb memory.

Killadoob: that top laptop has an Core i3 CPU, onboard graphics and only 1 year warranty.

You're right that you can get a desktop that will perform much better. These prices below are just estimates from what I can remember of a few weeks ago:

Yup but that 5400 rpm drive should slow down the performance surely? Sounds slow to me .
