Cosatu opposes Telkom-KT deal

further privatisation?

Are COSATU for real? How can one further privatise a company that is already private?... plus the 20% is not part of the guavamints shareholding you idjits...
 
I swear COSATU has someone on their payroll (read "paytroll") that just sifts through major deals going down and checks where they can cause they most shyte.
 
How long must we suffer the presence of these fools?
 
But then again is it such a good idea to have KT involved? If they help with growth then I don't really mind, but if they make no difference then we're just sending money out of the country...

Yes it will be a good idea for 2 reasons (one is incidental)
a) KT are well experienced at rolling our fibre and new generation data networks. South Korea is a world leader.

b) The loss of the govt controlling interest will force Telkom to be run on business terms and remove a lot of political influences
 
To be honest, if this deal goes ahead I can actually see that five years down the line we will be having a Korean Guy coming to my office to fix the phone lines.
And to be honest, I actually think that would be a great thing.
Things would actually work properly for a change.

even if you lose a couple of jobs when korea move in, how many jobs will be created through small businesses when the "broadband" offered in this country is actually really broadband. Not the kak we see now...

anyone with any logic/business sense knows that small businesses are the way of the future.

It is obvious that COSATU opposes any corporate bid that involves foreign share-holding in any SA company ... the Massmart / Walmart deal was just one, and a Telkom / Korean KT will also result in the same. The ANCYL, Cosatu will be the downfall of the entire SA economy
 
I wouldn't take it for granted that a foreign investor in Telkom will radically change how Telkom operates.
 
Cosatu's biggest problem is HIV, its killing the member base faster than they become unemployed :p

This is fallacy. The Koreans are investing their own money in the company. That means its balance sheet grows. If they make no difference to productivity, this does no harm to us. But if they help turn the company around and make it more productive overall... then everyone benefits -- local customers and shareholders, and the Koreans as well.

Believe it or not, when government is not involved, capitalism and free trade can actually be a win-win.

I wouldn't either. But they wouldn't be offering to invest if they expected Telkom to continue destroying value. It's not like anyone lays down R4bn+ without getting their facts straight first.
