As the title states , Sapphire Toxic HD6870 1GB vs HD 5770 crossfire. Which 1 would be better. I have 2 x 5770 running in crossfire right now, but someone is offering a 6870, so is it worth the move?
 
You're looking at roughly 13% increase in performance if you make the move to the 6870
 
I'd go with the 6870. It'll give you the option to add another 6870 in future which will roughly give you 20-30% over the GTX580 on average FPS. Not to mention the 6xxx series is supposed to be more stable and have better scaling than the 5xxx series... someone might correct me on that though since I'm not sure what part drivers played in issues and scaling regarding the 5xxx series.

Even if the 5770's are slightly faster you'll be eliminating the low/high drops between FPS that comes with dual GPU setups which would possibly even improve your gaming experience. You'll also be saving on noise, heat and power draw for now, if that's something you care about.

I wanted to upgrade my 6870 but after playing BF3 Beta and some of the newest titles I realized it really wasn't necessary. I'll wait for AMD to release new cards then decide what to do. For now, the 6870 works like a charm and it's nice to know I can get a real beefy setup for cheap once the 6870's drop to +-R1.5K.

stupid question, but my mobo has pci e 2.1, and this card is pci e 2.0. Will this really affect it?
 
It is supposed to be backward compatible but I've read about some compatibility issues on some of the newer motherboards and cards like the 8800GTS/GTX (which is pretty old).

What motherboard do you have?
 
If I do decide to sell my 2 x asus hd 5770's then how much should I ask for? How much should I sell them for to get cash quickly? I was thinking maybe R760 each (includes shipping). Doesn't that seem like a good price(seen as though they still retail @ R1450 each)?

Also what power supply do I require? I have a 750w with 4 x 6 pin connectors.

If your specs are something like this:

Asus P55 motherboard
Core i5 750
8GB Ram
DVD-RW
Up to 3 hard-drives
HD 6870

You could use this PSU:

(despite the price, it is an excellent unit)

750W is complete overkill. The 430W could easily cope. Anything above the HD6870 you'd need a better PSU.

The HD 6870 system uses 306Watt (at the wall socket so that takes into account inefficiency of the PSU). And that is with a 130W Core i7 CPU not a Core i5 95W CPU. 430W could cope easily.

Thanks for the info gnome. Now with regards to pricing of selling my cards, any input on pricing would be great (asus hd 5770).
 
What games do you play? Really need to upgrade or is it the CUD? :D

Put them on Carbonite - price, open to offers and you should sell quickly. I reckon anything over R1400 is good.
 
Just buying cuz it seemed like a decent price, and 5770's are still sellable :)
