Next Kindle restricts 'lifetime free 3G'

Anyone considering waiting for the new Kindle 4 (the so-called Kindle Touch) should be aware that if the current unlimited free 3G web-browsing for life in the Kindle 3 is important to you, it has been severely cut back in the new Kindles. Free 3G will only enable connection to Amazon itself (e.g. to download books) or Wikipedia. The rationale is that because the new device is faster and navigation is easier, Amazon could find itself carrying very large connectivity bills through its partners AT&T (in the USA) or Vodafone (abroad, including SA).

The free lifetime 3G currently enjoyed by Kindle 3 owners will not be affected, apparently.

So even though the current Kindle's browser is a bit clunky and slow, if you use the free 3G a lot for browsing or even, as someone I know does, for sending and receiving web-based e-mail, then stick with the current Kindle. Which will apparently continue to be sold, rebranded as the Kindle Keyboard (because the new models don't have a full keypad).

I may be wrong, but I gather the next Kindle has also done away with the ability to play MP3 files.
 
Browsing on the Kindle is just wrong. I understand their are individuals who try and save every cent, but if I really wanted to browse, then I would just use my phone.
 
I don't own one, but browsed on one. I thought it was great for anything that required reading and I even managed to get videos playing.

They also halved the memory of the new Kindle, I'm planning to get the Touch which still has 4gb & can play mp3's.
I wouldn't even try browsing on a device without a keyboard.
