Ahoy lads,

I've been doing my best to read up on winchester and venice etc. but rev E3, E4, I start to get a bit bewildered ;)
..in short can someone inform me what I should be looking for when I purchase my 3000+ or 3200+, .obviously a Venice (?), so BP instead of BI, umm what else?

With regards to my other thread, if anyone cares, I've given up on the whole micro ATX thing, ..I am now looking to OC up to 2.5 and beyond! ;) :P
So then I must just source a nice 400W, that is as silent as possible, for as little as possible. :)

If your looking for a Good Oc CPU heres what i would offer.

Buy an AMD opteron. 144 or 146.
They both come stock 200Mhz less than they 3200+ or 3500+ and are also the same price. They are the same chip as the 3200+ and the 3500+ underclocked for stability and they have an added 512k L2 cache. Making them 1Mb L2 cache.

The opterons have been clocked far past the 2000mhz clock speed sometimes even to 3000HMz, just give google a search and you'll find the stories.

I would also take the added cache over the 200Mhz standard clock speed.

Single Core Steppings: The list below is a general guide to the strength of steppings from best to worst (as determinded by their probability of reaching 3GHz):

1. CABNE 05xx (excluding 0540)
2. CABYE 0540
3, CABNE 0540 / CABYE 05xx (excluding 0540)
4. CAB2E 05xx
5. CABGE 05xx

It should be known that CAB2E's are more variable than other steppings. They are a bit hit or miss, a fact which diminishes their probability of hitting 3GHz. Many do, but many are stuck below 2.75. This assessment will be reviewed periodically as more info becomes available.

Um, ..don't spose you or anyone knows if Aspire cases are available in SA?
Particularly the ASPIRE X-QPACK-AL, .ok ok maybe I haven't totally given up on a micro ATX case,
seems this case with a different ball bearing 120mm fan for exhaust and a decent PSU also set to exhaust can provide a semi-good enviro for my kind of desired setup.
I would prob take off the extra Optical panel in front for intake airflow, maybe even a little fan there too..

hehe,I'm just busy ordering a Opteron 165,notorious Overclockers..
I can confirm Opterons of all types going over 3GHz on air....However thats some pretty heavy stuff....Getting to 2.5 is nothing for these babies on stock HSF .....
That being said....
I take it you are partly going Venice because of their availability in SA,I have had to order my Opteron from abroad....
You either get a good chip or not,I think you would have a hard time getting exact steppings in this country but here is something for you to take a look at:

Note your best value for money would be to go for a 3200+ they OC just aswell as the 3500+ and same cache amount.
EDIT-With regards to Power supply I can recomend:
PC Power and Cooling
Seasonic
Enermax
You would probably have a ****hard time finding a good PSU in SA,I can tell you that you might just end up with an AOPEN,but if you can find an ANTEC TRUEPOWER or TP2 I would say that would be better than an AOPEN....
However,note I recomend the top three brands,not the rest.

Although I like the sound of the 146 if it is at least around the same price! :)

I stock the full range of Opteron chips, and i buy from AMD so if you give me the steppings you are looking for i can get those. I normaly buy chips with the CABYE 0540 stepping so they are good for Oc'ing
 
The 144 is proving to be tricky to track down. Seems AMD dont make or stock it anymore. I'll find it though, but it will take me some time.

Hey m8,

Thx. I’m setting up all the dealerships, So far the AMD, Corsair, Alienware and the legend dealerships have come through. Within the next 2 months i hope to retail all my products at below supplier prices. I'll have to put together a pricelist soon so drop me and I’ll send it to you ASAP.
