Songbird plays the Web. Play any MP3 on the Web without leaving the page. Songbird can view Web pages as dynamic playlists that it can play, save, or automatically download every day.

Songbird plays your music too. Songbird has all the features you expect in a desktop media player. And Songbird constantly improves. Like Firefox, Songbird's features may be improved with user installed and contributed cross-platform extensions.

Soon, Web page authors will be able to publish playlists and transfer MP3s into Songbird to build digital music stores like eMusic, music subscription services like Yahoo! Music Unlimited, virtual jamming services like Ninjam, playlist sharing services like WebJay and more.

I must I've tried out the beta - although it does have its bugs, there is great potential in it.
 
There is no potential at all. It cannot play any DRM's file, which every single major music store has, so you will be relegated to using things like emusic and listening to unknown rubbish.

Nothing to see here. Move along
 
There is potentual because this release was just a proof of concept - now they can begin to licence DRM files ... I think it is a great idea with potentual, they just need ipod and video support :D

oh - and to let me play studd while I am not online :)
 
More Web 2.0 crap ... about as pointless and useless as the Flock browser.
 
pimal3 : DRM is most certainly not evil. When dealing with digital media and lossless copying, DRM is needed to protect the Copyright. Sure, you can get certain DRM implementations that go too far, and take too many of the consumers rights away, but there are many DRM implementations, such as FairPlay, that reach a very fair compromise.

The new update to Songbird does look quite impressive.

The Visualisation plans look especially interesting


And I think it is now possible to play protected WMA files
