3G connect via Phone

I have a contract bought laptop with a 3G dongle & 500MB data package.
This contract is due to expire at the same time as my phone contract (2 separate contracts).

I am considering to get the phone bundled with a 500MB data package and ditch the extra laptop data package.

How good is a 3G connection on a laptop via the phone connection?
- Is this type of connection possible with any decent smart phone (iPhone, Android, Blackberry, Windows 7) ?
- Connect ease?
- Stability?
- Speed (is there any expected loss compared to a 3G dongle directly attached to the PC)?

Note: Connection Stability & Speed are critical for my job and must be as good as the direct 3G dongle connect

Think about Cell-C 2MBx12 or 5MBx12 sim-only package before promo ends (soon). Test connection first with prepaid SIM R1.
 
Although more than 500MB will be nice, it's not critical.

I use 3G for Remote Desktop services via VPN. Does not use a lot but does require a relatively fast and stable connection.

Been using Vodacom for 3 years and is available virtually anywhere.

How good is the Cell C 900MHz coverage?
 
I've used many 3G/HSPA handsets as modems and provided that you use a USB cable, there is no difference between a dongle and the phone. However, using the phone as a modem via Bluetooth is not recommended.

Most phones now charge via USB so flat batteries while using as a modem are a thing of the past.

Now that phone is seriously fast, but there are a lot phones out there, that are not worth more than an emergency back-up connection. My fairly recent BB 8520, can only do edge ... :(
 
I have an HTC Desire HD which acts as a HotSpot to share it's connection wirelessly. Works fantastically well and is as simple as enabling on the handset and connecting the pc to it with an SSID and PreShared Key. Stays active while using the phone and I have never had any connectivity issues whatsoever. Speed will be dependent on reception and provider you use. I have an MTN Sim in mine and ran Speedtest - Ping 110ms, Download 1445kbps, Upload 927kbps. Hope that helps you.
 
Got a Dell Streak Android 2.2.2.
Works amazingly as a router access point - connect is simple and speed is as fast as with Vodafone 3570 USB modem
