How do I get Telkom to flip me to 10 meg?

According to the web tester my exchange supports 10 meg.
The exchange box is across the street from my complex <700m away.
My 4 meg line is still only providing 4 megs. Is there any way I can ask Telkom to unlimit my line to get the 10 megs the Telkom web site says my line/exchange supports?

I assume you've already called and asked them right?

Lots of animal sacrifices & constant self flaggelation. Won't really help though, I've been in the same situation for 4 months now & Telkom just keeps on saying No.

Yip, and I got a very vague non-commital answer along the lines of its an 'up to' 10 meg service so they couldn't really care less if it's 10 or 4.

Esentially 'nah we don't feel like it'

I finally got mine sorted out a few weeks ago. The problem is finding someone in the call-centre who knows what they are doing and put you through to the provisioning people. It took me about four months of phoning every couple of weeks to get the line upgraded.

Just make sure that you are on an ADSL2 circuit first (your router will tell you in the Mode entry under ADSL statistics), you have to wait for that to happen first and no amount of phoning will make that happen any faster as that is a physical requirement rather than "flipping a switch".

Its a different DSLAM old DSLAM is up to 4 meg IMAX is 10 meg

Phone back once a week. Eventually you'll get through to someone competent.

Took me 5 months of phoning at least once a week to get them to swop me from the old ADSL DSLAMs to the new ADSL2+ DSLAMs

I don't think getting moved from one DSLAM to another is helped by phoning, that is all part of their scheduled work, and it will happen when it happens.

The thing is I was moved to the ADSL2+ DSLAM, but remained at 4Mb for ages after that. That only requires a flick of a soft switch somewhere and finding someone who knows how to do this is basically going to cost you time on the phone every week or so until you can get someone who knows, and could be @rsed.

Its pathetic really, and you will be told all sorts of things like "that exchange is still in a test phase", "that exchange only supports 6Mb", or the classic "it will be done automatically". No point getting cross, just hang up and dial the 0800 number again. Eventually you will get lucky.

you need to find someone who knows what they doing.

do yourself a favour and go into a telkom office and they will put the request through on their system. that is your best bet

im just grateful that I order has been restored to my line. feel for the other okes with congested symptoms

:erm:

I never tried that, but it is probably worth a shot, might have saved hours of fruitless telephone calls.

It seems the Telkom 10Mb web tester URL I bookmarked some time ago is not working anymore. Can anyone post a link?

Edit: Nevermind, found it. Looks like I'll be phoning them too!

"Max speed supported by your exchange: 10240"

I phoned yesterday, and its like everybody at Telkom has been trained to say no, when you mention anything about 10 Meg.

/puts tinfoil hat
Makes me wonder if it even exists.

Currently in the same boat. On 4meg, but I know I am on a IMAX DSLAM and syncing at ADSL2+ so pretty certain my DSLAM supports 10meg, but the incompetent support staff mostly don't want to help you and just interested to get through the day.

Well, a friend that lives just around the corner from me is still on 4Mb and syncing with G.DMT and not ADSL2+...

They phoned me after upgrading the line to check that it's working and that I'm happy now.

My exchange supports Adsl 2+ and 10 meg lines, but sadly my dslam is on G.dmt and 4 megs :(

How long will it take them to upgrade the dslam

The trick is to stop calling and actually go to your nearest TELKOM DIRECT STORE and talk to the people who talk 1 on 1 with customers, not at the pay-counters but you know the other ones(I hope I am making sense).

People on the phone don't seem to care.

I phone in and told the woman that i know more then her about what is going on and she must listen and do what i say and if she cant comprend then i ask to speak to the manager currently there. Works like a charm most of the times unless the manager is also a turbo tit then i struggle and give up lol XD.

Just tell them that you want to upgrade the speed cause they downgraded it last time the internet was droping but now everything is working fine and your SNR and margins are looking really good.

Go search what your SNR should be to have a stable 10 Mbps line.
