Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a woman at King Shaka International Airport for allegedly commenting that she was carrying a bomb in her luggage.

Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) spokesman Colin Naidoo said the woman was on an early morning flight to Johannesburg on Friday, when she commented to a check-in clerk that she had a bomb in her bag.

Naidoo said the check-in staff member felt unsure if the woman was joking or not, and proceeded to alert authorities about the situation.

It is believed police then arrived at the Kulula check-in counter, where the woman was, and escorted her from the area into police holding cells.

“She was then arrested under the Civil Aviation Act, for making comments that threatened the safety of others,” Naidoo told IOL.

“There are signage markers clearly visible above all check-in counters at every airline’s station. These kinds of comments (about passengers carrying bombs in their luggage) creates unnecessary delays and puts passengers and staff at risk,” he said.

Naidoo said the woman’s luggage had been removed and tested by sniffer dogs and had been discovered to have not contained any explosive material.

“We want to encourage the public to remember that check-in agents are there are to protect the safety of passengers and airline crew.

“Passengers must not act in a manner that is deemed inappropriate by disrespecting the questions they are asked at check in. They must answer with either a ‘yes’ or ‘no’,” he said. - IOL

I say throw this silly woman in jail for a year! Lets see how funny it is then!!!!

I can't believe that there are people still making bomb jokes at airports... How dumb can you be really!!

She should be put in a padded cell for her own safety and the safety of others.

Yea you can just imagine how freaked out they must be with all the suicide bombings and what not that we have in this country.

When will people learn, you cant make jokes about bombs in airports or on planes

So we must just let people go wild at our airports?

There is always a first time for everything. Our country might be a boring one when it comes to natural disasters, planes exploding, terrorism etc..does not mean that we should sit back and scratch our arses and throw safety protocols out the window.

I bet she felt 'cool' and 'funny' for saying it in an airport! She must feel like a right fool now.

No it just seems a big over reaction but yea i guess if you don't over react people will do it way more :D.

We need pat downs

I'd rather be a bit serious and paranoid, than just let her through and there is a bomb which they didn't find and then KA-BOOM 300 people dead :(

I'm with you. The problem IMO is that they don't educate the public. Some people travel very infrequently and just don't realise the implications of a joke. Simple as that. Blame ACSA. What does it cost them to have informational posters around the place making that point clear?

someone should've really given her a bomb. Lets see how funny she would've found it

"Yes, I have a bong."

"Excuse me, did you say you have a bomb?"

"No, I have a bong."

"She has a bomb!! She has a bomb!!"

I once told the check-in clerk I had scissors in my hand luggage. Then he told me I have to check it in, but I told him I'd take my chances. I only had carry-on luggage and was not about to try and find a big bag to put the scissors in. I passed the scan without it detecting my scissors, cool I thought, I'm clear.

Then as I was about to board my plane the security personnel stopped me and asked me if I had scissors. Oh shiz I thought, now its gonna get ugly. So they asked me to show them my scissors, and I did, all 2 cm of it. It was a micro-scissor, and the effing check-in clerk thought it worthwhile to flag it after I have shown him how insignificant it is. So the security person just laughed and ushered me into the plane, telling me its nothing.

I guess it's the check-in clerk's job to overreact.

If you are that STUPID that you need to be told that joking about having a bomb on your person or luggage then there is no fcking hope for you! Rather crawl back under the rock where you came from then and stay put instead of trying to spread your stupidity by means of air travel.
