Steve Jobs was great for consumers (Column)

mmmm, i dunno tough article, nearly every paragraph - and there many - throw in a different nugget.

I think the article does raise an interesting point.

If the stuff people want begins shifting from being almost entirely physical to heavily digital, then clearly many low skilled workers will lose their jobs because physical manufacturing will no longer be as important in the digital economy. The ANC is failing to skill up the population, which means many will have essentially no place in the production of the world's future digital goods.

Obviously there will always be a massive need for physical goods, and the point above is rather simplistic, but will the masses of South Africa be well placed to dabble in the digital economy? I think not.

I think another point worth raising is the old chestnut of some cultures and lifestyles essentially being incompatible with urban/modern living. At some point - and i would agree this seems almost impossible given the last 150 years - they will need to figure out a way to get certain people to shift from urban to rural living.

I would guess, that at some point in the future blacks in this country will start drifting in significant numbers back to rural areas. You can't play the urban game when you don't have the skillset to compete in an urban environment. This is why we see so many squatter camps around the cities; it comes down to people trying to fulfill a dream which will never happen as long as they stay uneducated. For now the dream still lives, but for most it'll stay a nightmare. At some point opinions will begin to shift, and perhaps it would take a government effort to make rural living viable, or perhaps fashionable is a better word.

In Jobs we trusted.

Steve knew something the Goverment doesn't. He understood that a product consists of three equally important components.
An object should be functional.
If its not the it will fail...so gov. IF It does not work, replace it with something/someone who will make it work.

An object should be designed for the task.
Special care should be given to the unique aspects of the object and a inferior product will never make it...so gov. manufacturing is good for SA. Design is better. Design makes things more desirable. Why not design something here, produce it wherever, export it to the rest of the world, make money that comes back to SA.

An object should challenge that statues quo.
So gov. what have you done to rock the boat...FOR THE BETTER?

Jobs was right in focusing on on the people that give them money to survive. So gov....can't you focus on us and less on your self.

Jobs taught me one thing, to be good enough means you are always behind the race leaders.

I agree, anthropology studies indicated that informal settlement have a unique but defined structure. I believe that with help from a foreword looking gov we can improve the informal settlement instead of moving the residence to a new place with a better but still crappy house.

there will always be a need for hard labour...just look what china is doing...

Yeah exactly. Also i doubt the digital economy will spread in a meaningful way everywhere. Most people in the townships just watch pirated movies and porn. Beyond that they don't really consume much content, and if they do its pirated. I also doubt paid for educational content will ever really get popular in africa.

The US and europe will always be the biggest produces of digital content. Which means we don't have to worry about competing, because we won't be able to, at least at anything beyond a niche level.

If something is going to kill manufacturing jobs its robotics. Within 20 years i doubt a company like foxconn will be employing many people (unless forced to). They are already installing a million "humanoid" robots to do many of the menial jobs. This trend will probably see many US companies shifting factories back to the states. Even now, apple only spends about 8 dollars an iPhone on labour. Once robots can do more for cheaper i'm sure china might lose some of its cheap labour advantage.

Geez please make it stop, when will this jobs worshiping stop? What did he really do for the poor?

He made millions sorry billions out of the ordinary man on the street. All made out of..... well ....you go research what the foxconn factories are like in china......

He was good at marketing. Now can we all carry on with our lives because really he didn't make much of a difference to the majority of the worlds population, just the ilovers.

Just as malema is good at attracting a certain type of sheep to follow him so too jobs was great at attracting a certain type of consumer.Thats all there is to it,and unfortunately ALOT of the media is part of that consumer base so apple and him get much better reviews than malema does.

Maybe its time journos start being less opinionated about these types of things. If you dont know ALOT about tech then you shouldnt be writing tech articles or claiming that apple is the holy grail of technology.

Wow, what a troll of a post. Did you even read the article?
I doubt you did, since you didn't address any of the arguments raised

The BIGGEST isheep in the forum calls me a troll LMAO.......take a good look at yourself buddy, theres more to the world then being an isheep.....and alot more tech companies that have just a brilliant if not more brilliant devices than apple.Blackberry, android, newer versions of symbian hell even windows mobile.Open your eyes and you may just experience a whole new world that you never even THOUGHT was out there.

I dont hate apple but I hate this isheep mentality that most apple fans seem to develop. And now that jobs died we trying to relate his views to the well being of the masses ??seriously wtf did he ever do to help the poor???????

Its easy to criticize government, but what about the greedy corporates of the world. They only make the rich richer.I know I'm a second major shareholder of a corporate company and believe me that any corporate that says they have the interests of the masses at heart is lying.Atleast I have the balls to admit it.You think jobs and apple would admit that?Or any other large corporate worth its marketing skin value??I can say the same for alot of corporates that I had the unfortunate displeasure of being involved with, massmart,a certain large soft drink manufacturer and a supply chain and logistics company.Everyone of them is the same.Pull the wool over the masses eyes so that we can make a killing and get a second luxury yatch.

I had an iphone or two and they were awesome devices but they far from perfect.

Unless you making profit out of that overpriced idevice, then it makes sense. Are you affiliated to apple or core group maybe in anyway?

A simple yes or no will suffice,im not getting further into this debate with you unless you have shares in apple.

Yes, Guglielmo Marconi was also a great for consumers, but it does not change the fact that he was a big f-tard.

Calling people iSheep is trolling. It is just the same as the trolls that use $ signs when saying MS.

And once again, you didn't address the arguments raised in the article.

And no, I have no shares in Apple or any Apple related company.
