State of South Africa's Internet

Nice to see Nederland way up there, makes me proud to be Afrikaans.
 
Well I would say that because of Telkoms reduction in price and increase in speed on the 512/1024kbps level, a lot of 4mbps customers dropped down to 1mbps for affordability reasons. This may explain the drop in broadband adoption (over 2mbps) average speed...
 
Telkom is way too expensive when it comes to broadband, and for the lower LSMs there are very feew if any broadband+pc options available to them (if any)
 
Well, I'm quite sure the speeds correlate very strongly with population density. Why was this not noted? SA can never compete with Japan, HK and the Netherlands, but then neither can the US.
 
Depressing report but wonder how Telkom would comment on this report. I suspect much like their submissions at the LLU hearings.

I don't think price is really an issue when it comes to speed. Obviously you want the best that you can get but I think reliability is more important. When, due to location, one is forced to use Telkom ADSL fixed lines that can just stop working - as mine just did while I was typing this - or when you are trying to listen to music, or anything, (just stopped again) it is just so frustrating you hope that the Koreans strip and steal Telkom bare so that the major shareholder - government - is forced to close it down and let a commercial company take over the space. My 4Mb line stopped working three times while I was typing this - can anyone beat that?
 
I don't think we necessarily need to look at much higher speeds than 10Mbps but the price of the actual data. Imagine a 40Mbps with your 5Gb cap...
 
And guess what guys our broadband speeds aren't gonna change ANY TIME SOON! -face palm- R700+/- a month for a ADSL line is such a rip off. If we were in America then we would've had the best of the best for what we are paying here... sigh... *go sulks in a corner*
 
I am forced to drop my speed also, back to 386Kb/s.
With rising costs everywhere, the internet is the first to got cut. Yet we have to pay more everywhere.
Again we are compared to USA. In the USA the fees are peanuts compared to what we pay for internet. Nearly everywhere in the world it is priced better for better speeds. Many say the fault for this lies with Telkom and its monopoly over lines.
It is kept being rubbed in out faces that we have world class cities. Yet we lack world class internet, to name one.
 
Reliability is more important than price or speed - with Telkom in charge of the "last mile" you get neither. Radio does not work if you happen to live in a valley - no 3G, little Iburst and nothing else. I can't wait for LTE if it follows the ground contours. Bring it on!
 
The problem is that broadband penetration, quality and growth are absolutely key to financial growth in the country, innovation (keeping us on the cutting edge) across the board and future education levels etc - it impacts on our very future. We are looking at very depressing figures, although we have the resources to do so much better.
