Well, I dunno about anybody else, but I am not planning on buying any e-tag, paying any tolls or fines or anything else.

Better hope those motorists come to the party or you could end up alone in a cold damp cell. Well not entirely alone Bubba will be there to keep you warm

Yes, I agree. South Africans are very bad at "unity" to pressure the government.

I'm confident that this will be a billing nightmare for them to implement anyway... willing resistance or not.

obviously the latter, but hey I'm a realist, and knowing how ZA operates(or should I say our government) we are going to be end up paying high prices anyway.
 
The N12 is not even close to finished, but guess what, the toll gates on that highway are completed. There is no way they'll scrap it after the money that has been invested. This is some of the most advanced tolling technology in the world, and if they just stop where they are now, then they'll open a whole other can of worms, what with wasted tax monies and all that.

The best we can currently hope for is a compromise that drastically reduces the fees, allows for proper flat fees for frequent travellers, and pulls all the parties into the boat (meaning taxis and such will pay their fair share). And even that is mostly just wishful thinking...

everything will become more expensive due to these toll roads, thanks Ruling Party! no mr shack dweller, you are not exempt unfortunately, even though Julias says theyre looking after you.

imagine how nice an upgrade zuma can NOW get on his place after all this!
hell, for that matter , no diplomat will EVER have to fly cattle class again, just take R250k and fly private, theres a LOT of money still in the pot
 
Well if they had done a decent job in setting up the roads and didn't have to keep repairing them, then I would have no objection to paying R5 from Pta to Jhb one way.

But they were too eager to make a buck and to construct substandard roads, due to fraudulent deals and back hands to contractors with no recognized track record - and now they sit with a hiccup and trying to divert the problem to the man on the street.
 
What irritates me the most about the (proposed/revised/whatever) tolls is that taxis and buses are entirely exempt. Could this be at all related to the fact that taxi operators would just blockade the highways if expected to pay tolls, so the decision simply removes them entirely and average citizen coughs up once again. Now that they're exempted, they obviously won't protest about the tolls, so that little problem has been avoided.

Mr Cronin agreed the exemption was not expected to have a huge effect on toll-road revenue as public transport was found to represent only 2% of the total usage.

So if it is such a small percentage, why give them exemption and thereby create the impression that they are getting special treatment?

I wish COSATU would burn the freaking things down, that I will gladly help with.
Sorry but I am done supporting the lavish lifestyles of these ministers and their cronies.
 
As many have said before, road infrastructure (building new roads and maintaining existing ones) should already be covered by existing taxes, vehicle licenses and a portion of every litre of petrol. If funds were properly managed and lavish expenditure avoided, we wouldn't need another "tax". Just like the new NHI proposals.
