Cable company NTL will be trialling a new service in March. In partnership with Arris and BitTorrent the trial will take place in Ashford, Kent. The 100Mb speed will be 10 times the highest speed offered by NTL at the moment.

NTL aren’t just offering this speed increase out of the goodness of their hearts, the bosses at NTL have been working hard over the past few months, with a takeover of Telewest broadband currently taking place and a proposed bid for Virgin Mobile. This move will add another direction to their plans. With a 100Mb service HD videos will be readily available, and with the support of BitTorrent these can easily be shared, with appropriate licenses of course.

A 100Mb service will mean that the UK will finally compete with the rest of the world in terms of high speed broadband, with countries in Europe and Asia offering speeds of 10Mb or higher years ago. It will also be a huge push for HD technology in the next year, with on demand movies available and the possibility of a service that could rival Sky’s ‘Sky+’ package.

It’s definitely a rollercoaster of a time at NTL at the moment, just a fortnight ago broadband users around the country were subject to regular cuts in their service and there have been frustrated calls from users disappointed with their new 10Mb connection. One things for sure though, when a 100Mb service becomes available speed enthusiasts will be queuing up to put pen to paper.

I like this part. But then they probably don't see South Africa as part of "the rest of the world";)
 
Depressing, yet enlightening at the same time. Don't know wether to be happy (that technology is awesome) or sad (that we will NEVER get this).

Although it does show the capacity, most of this is marketing blurb - most people can probably only receive those speeds if they're really close to the exchanges (<500m).
 
The reality is that it'll be a long time before those speeds reach widespread use.

At present, even a 2mb line doesn't guarantee 2mb downloads, my speed varies and it's seldom I see 200k+ for more than a minute or so, my 2mb line is more like a 1mb - which is why they advertise as "up to 2mb"

This 100mb service is a totally different kettle of fish, because it's obvious that the top speeds will only be accessible from servers with the available bandwidth, which in the case of HDTV bittorrent seeds, will be heavily controlled.

At any given time, the majority of servers are incapable of serving files at the broadband speeds currently being advertised, which is why p2p applications are the most important aspect of the future of digital broadband broadcasting - every computer becomes a server. Nice concept, will be interesting to see how it pans out in terms of "who controls what"

Telkom will hopefully eventually be forced into the same cycle that the UK has gone through, do or die. The SA gubberment will have to get their heads out of the sand real quick, as it's clear that a poor broadband infrastructure is rapidly becoming as dire for investment as "traditional" services, such as voice.

Just imagine those speeds. The drawback is (if my calculations are correct) in SA it will take you round 4.5 min to reach your 3 Gig cap.
Or you can pay per gig, let it run at full speed for one month and download 32 695 Gig.
