Linksys WAG354G firmware update

Hi all,

FYI...

I have the Linksys WAG354G ADSL router + wireless AP. Last night, I tried to update the firmware to version 1.01.05, but after the update, the power led on the modem stay Red, and I can't get to access the modem anymore.

After some research, I found the tftp.exe from linksys's ftp site, which also does the job for firmware update. After a few attempt, I get the new firmware to load to the modem. So the modem's switch part is working (does assign IP to my desktop machine) but I still can't access the setup web interface, and the ADSL modem is not working, neither do the WiFi AP.

Today, after more research, I realised that the tftp.exe program from linksys ftp only support files under 3MB, and the firmware is 3.5MB, so I guess the program cut of the firmware and got the wrong idea that the firmware is properly written.

So I get a 3rd party TFTP client, so i can upload the full firmware into the modem. Problem didn't end here. When I try to upload firmware, the modem give an error message as the password is invalid. but hello, TFTP shouldn't support authentication at all...

So, the solution for this issue is, get the TFTP to upload the firmware before the modem bootup complete. In other word, hit "Update" as you plug in the power cable. Since windows does have a command prompt TFTP client, one shouldn't really need to go for any 3rd party option. all you need to do is, open command prompt (cmd.exe), type in
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT C:\code.bin
here I assume the firmware file is in C drive root, and it is called code.bin.
I am not sure if you can use other file name, I guess it should still work...

As I mentioned earlier, it is just for one's interest,
hope no one will ever need to go through these steps,

I can't feel any difference...
was going to exchange the switch if i couldn't get it right :)
apparently, it will make PS2 work properly with this modem.
but i don't have a PS2...
 
Did you guys buy the antenna for this modem? I'm getting disconnected quite often with the USB adapter so am thinking of getting the antenna to boost up the signal. Just wondering if it's worth the R300
 
how can i find the upgrade ? and how to download upgrade thing??

I haven't buy the external antenna, because the signal look pretty strong to me (even my neighbour can get it, so I had to use Mac filter...)
Depends on what brand USB wireless adapter you use, I suggest you go get a linksys USB/PCI/PCMCIA WiFi card to test, if it work better, keep it. otherwise, get refund and take the money to purchase the antenna. :)

Why do you want to upgrade if there is no additional benefits... If it works, leave it, don't change it... I know, it's IT...
 
So I just set up a WAG354G for a client here in durban. I was unable to get link on the DSL side and was pulling my hair out on this issue. I was ready to throw in the towel and go with a Netgear when I decided to give the firmware update a bash and lo and behold it worked.

I also didn't experience the same problem that kenl did, the update facility in the the web based frontend worked fine with the 3.5mb update file.

WAG354G-EU_AnnexA_EU_v1.01.05_004_code is the file name.

Hope that this helps anyone who experienced my problem. (I think that telkom's marconi's are a little more forgiving of poor quality lines and this is what these technician clowns test with)
