According to this - http://www.liquidm3dia.com/?id=10024 - microsoft is using this to prevent less than legitimate users from downloading software and updates.

I see no problem with that.
Neither do I - but some might and forewarned is forearmed especially with recent reports about microsoft actively requiring new licenses when replacing motherboards.
